Honestly, it all depends on the situation. When starting a new novel or story, I just open my senses to everything around me. I tend not to read or watch anything. Most of my ideas come to me while driving, walking, or daydreaming (kind of like watching the story as a movie in my mind). It usually works, but then again, I'm far from a millionaire so I still have a ton to learn!
When in the midst of a novel, like now, I just reread what I have written earlier and either get excited about what I've created and try to keep it flowing or get frustrated and attempt to correct whatever garbage I wrote previously.

Write down where I'm stuck and do something else. The subconscious does wonders.
I solved a massive plot issue with my current book while napping. Woke up with the solution. Wish I could take credit for that!
Other than that, push on through. Chat with another writer for a bit. It just might stir something.

Don't spout excuses (I did for too long). Just make the time to write.
Everyone's life is crazy busy (I have a 2yr old and nutty job). If the passion is there, make the effort and give up something you don't truly need to make sure the writing is done.

I moved to Staunton, Virginia and discovered that an infamous mental hospital was just down the hill. Upon investigation, I learned that the superintendent of the facility in the early 20th century actually inspired Hitler.
The rest is even more chilling, if that can be believed.
Writing a novel based on these true events was a ton of fun but I believe that people need to know this dark part of history. Unfortunately, it's still pretty relevent.
Now, I just need an agent...
