Communal Tensions in Mangalore

Diary Entry. Nothing official about it.

This year in February, I went along with my wife to a small trip to Karnataka for some stress-bustin’. Our stops included Mangalore, Udupi, Murudeshwar and Gokarna. Now the air over the past few months has turned heavier than before or so my short-term memory serves. Topics that involve Hindu-Muslim conflict have started dominating the News cycles and it is i

Abhyudaya’s Recent Updates

Simple Passion by Annie Ernaux
"My first Ernaux!

I want to read everything written by her, preferably multiple times.
I know I'll be returning to this one time and again.

Here's a longer review:

I read this book twenty days ago and I still keep thinking about it. I find myself wanting" Read more of this review »

While reading this novel, I was acutely aware of the pertinence of this work of literature. It is a politically charged novel written as a sharp commentary on the era of Emergency and the society of those times. It is written with a sense of purpose. ...more
Abhyudaya Shrivastava is on page 546 of 603 of A Fine Balance: Suddenly it has started making sense. The hyperbole was not without purpose. I feel an anger against caste violence, discrimination and disbalaned power structures in India. It is an incredibly sad book but that's because the author seems to be incredibly angry with the status quo.

लेकिन goodreads के पाठकों के लिए हिन्दी में भी कुछ लिख रहा हूँ। सबसे पहली बात तो ये कि गोदान की कहानी में गा

Abhyudaya Shrivastava and 2 other people liked Amisha's review of Verity:
Verity by Colleen Hoover
"Okay… wow. Verity was a wild ride from start to finish. Colleen Hoover doesn’t just tell a story, she gets under your skin, making you second-guess every character’s motive and your own gut reaction. The tension pulled me in, but it was the eerie psy" Read more of this review »
The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat
"A strange novel. Sits (in a literary vein) on an eastern surrealist shelf and it reminded me in parts of Naiyer Masud's Seemiya, and perhaps even Khalid Jawed's Nematkhana. Though it is not really 'like' these other Urdu novels. The Blind Owl achieve" Read more of this review »
