It’s funny, but thinking back on it now, I realize that this particular point in time, as I stood there blinking in the deserted hall, was the one point at which I might have chosen to do something very different from what I actually did.

“And remember, fear stands for false, evidence, appearing, real. There’s nothing to fear. Just be strong and fight. We’ll walk away from this as long as you believe we will. Life doesn’t owe you, but it does provide opportunities. You can either watch things happen, make things happen or wonder what the fuck happened. Choose well and we’ll make it. Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent. Never give up. I take an interest in my future because I’m going to spend the rest of my life there. You should too.”

“Looks interesting,” I said, handing the book back. “But not for me. I prefer pictures.” He didn’t take the book. Just pushed it gently toward me. “This book does have pictures.” He must be crazy. I had just looked. To humor him, I flipped through the pages again and when I got to the end of the book, I held it up. “No pictures.” “Sure there is,” he said. I remember thinking how stubborn he was. “The pictures are hiding.” Now he had my attention. I looked down at the book in my hand. He continued, “The pictures are inside the words.” “What?” Now I was confused. (Remember, I was quite young.) “Read the first page. Maybe the second. You’ll see.” He nodded at the book. “The pictures will rise out of the page and into your head. Don’t worry, your eyes will form the pics from the words.” He started to lose me at that young age, but I did what he said. I opened the book to chapter one and started reading. And I gasped. A picture formed instantly.”

“Here. This is me stroking your nice, soft, straight hair. This is me holding you and telling you that I love you. And this is me telling you that you love me, and Victoria, and Colette, already. You maybe love Scott, and maybe love Nikita. And adding one more love or even one more maybe love to your life is something good. Adding one more person who will love you in return, adding one more person who will have your back when you need it most, is worth the fear.”
