Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) I am not familiar with that one Amber - will have to keep an eye out for it.

message 6: by Amber (last edited Aug 22, 2014 12:27PM) (new)

Debbie Zapata I haven't bought these yet but they are on my wish list at Amazon and I will be ordering soon so they will be waiting for me at Mom's house when I get there in early November...not as far away as it seems!!

Tolstoy: A Russian Life by Rosamund Bartlett
Karate-Do: My Way of Life by Gichin Funakoshi
The Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate: The Spiritual Legacy of the Master by Gichin Funakoshi
The Essence of Karate by Gichin Funakoshi
Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams

It seems that Funakoshi was the founder of Shoto-kan karate, which is the style Marco holds a brown belt in. So I MIGHT let Marco read these books too....=))

Amber got two free ebooks at a website called http://www.tryaudiobooks.com

they had these two for free:

and
Lost and Found in Cedar Cove

message 17: by Lucy (new)

Lucy My friend bought me The Kill Order, The Death Cure and Plague as a late birthday presents, and the other half bought me The Maze Runner and The 100
I also bought The Scorch Trials and The One Plus One with money I was given for my birthday.
Do you think my friends and family know I am a bookworm?! I rarely get anything but books or vouchers for books these days, lol. Normally get a voucher for my kobo from my 2 kids at christmas too, haha! I feel like a kid when I talk about birthday money haha, but then I realise birthday money is something I have to start thinking of soon, since my boys are 2 and 6 !!

Debbie Zapata While we were in Huamantla we saw a new bookshop so we got a few small ones to add to the bookshelf we have for the public at our ultramarathon events. We try to have a nice variety of short books to lure people into the pleasure of reading.

They can take one of our books and go sit under a tree or wherever to read, and hopefully they will enjoy the experience enough to start reading more on their own. We had a few copies of various Fairy Tales like El Gato En Botas (Puss In Boots) and other volumes aimed at children. In this new store we found some small volumes that will appeal to adults (and of course we plan to read them ourselves!):

Plantas Medininales II (Medicinal Plants II)
Reglas Basicas del Feng Shui (Basic Rules of Feng Shui)
El Yoga Y Los Chakras (Yoga and the Chakras)

El Libro De La Selva (The Jungle Book) by Rudyard Kipling

From the Series Biografia (Biography):
Quetzalcoatl by Adrian Soto and Alejandra Gonzalez
Emiliano Zapata by Ettore Pierri

We are looking forward to our next event in October when we can unveil the new books!! =))

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) Ultramarathon??? We are definitely poles apart there twin! I am a sloth by nature (other than I like walking, body-boarding, kayaking, horse-riding and snorkelling) - nice gentle pursuits.
I hope you had a lovely time. 8:D

awesome Debbie, enjoy Different Seasons!

message 27: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Thanks, Amber...I've wanted to read Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption ever since I saw the movie....can't wait! Excited about the others too, especially the one about Sicily. My dad had marched across Africa in WWII and fought in Sicily, then went up Italy until he was wounded at Anzio and sent home. He never would talk much about what happened so this will help me understand.

message 28: by Amber (new)

Amber Different Seasons was a pretty good read. I liked all of them except for the WWII Nazi one as it was disturbing and stuff. lol. so enjoy.

I got and then there were none by Agatha Christie for free on goodreads so will check it out in the future as my first Agatha Christie novel.

message 29: by Amber (new)

Amber Thanks Stephanie. The Fault in our stars is pretty good. Enjoy but be sure to get your Kleenex out as it is pretty sad.

Bionic Jean Sandra wrote: "I just purchased Dorothy Sayer Volume 11 Premium Lord Wimsey Collection E-book from Amazon for 99c - it contains 4 novels including Murder Must Advertise and 18 short stories!"

I hope Amazon UK has that deal soon, Sandra! I want to reread some of Dorothy L Sayers's excellent crime novels, but they're all so pricey when you buy them separately :(

message 38: by Amber (new)

Amber A friend of my sister's and mine gave me the book Divergent for Christmas today so plan to read it in the new year. I also got barnes and noble gift cards from family too. :-)

message 40: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean I'm seriously wondering if I have started my second childhood ...

After quite a few broad hints, my husband bought me a few of the "Illustrated Classics" - comics/graphic novels I remember from childhood, such as this one Classics Illustrated 48 of 169 : David Copperfield. The rights have been bought by a firm who's reprinted some (on much better paper) so its a real trip down memory lane. Also The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.

See what I mean? :D Oh well, I always think presents should be about fun things.

message 41: by Candi (new)

Candi Texts from Jane Eyre: And Other Conversations with Your Favorite Literary Characters and The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories were added to my collection on Christmas day! I also received a kindle fire from my husband! I had previously been determined never to acquire anything like this, until the last few months when I have decided that it wouldn't hurt to read an e-book every now and then! Can't wait to play with it and download some books!

message 42: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean That's really exciting Candi - I'm sure you'll love it :)

message 43: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Santa was sure good to everyone!! Have fun and enjoy!!

I love reading children's books - I still have all my AA Milne collection, Roald Dahl, and Wind in the Willows. I seem to have lost my Alice books, and a few poetry treasuries......but am keeping an eye out in the second hand shops to replace them. 8:D

message 46: by Michael (new)

Michael got Killing Patton
by Bill O'Reilly for Christmas.

message 47: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata That sounds interesting, Michael. My Dad was part of Patton's army in Sicily. They say soldiers either loved or hated Patton...Dad was one of the haters. From what I've read about him, I would have said he was a brilliant military mind. Will be looking forward to what you think about this book!

message 48: by Amber (new)

Amber Recently got these books at a 5 used books for $20.00 sale at the Hastings book store last night and got these books. Just got to figure out which one of them I want to read first, they all look interesting though:

The Enemy
The Year of the Hare
Three Graves Full
Freaky Green Eyes
Pastworld

message 49: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean Happy to meet fellow children's book enthusiasts. I can't claim that all the ones I like are such "classics" though!

message 50: by Holly (new)

Holly Got Revival and The Panther for Christmas.
