Simon Paul Woodward writes horror, science-fiction and dark-fantasy for adults and young adults. He lives just south of London (London, England that is … not one of the 10 Londons in the USA, London Kiribati or 8837-London, which is an asteroid). It’s best to be precise about these things.

Before he didn’t live on an asteroid, he was born in the Midlands, studied in the North and relocated to the South. His accent is a bit of a mess.

He loves Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Michael Marshall Smith, David Mitchell, Patrick Ness, China Mieville, The Flaming Lips, Elbow, Ennio Morricone, Sergio Leone, David Lynch, David Lean, Johnny Marr, Max Richter, football and running, gin and bagels... but believes marzipan was created by the Devil

Million pound publishing contracts, riverside mansions, worldwide fame; just a few of things that I haven't experienced as a result of my writing.

I'm not saying these luxuries would be unwelcome, but the greatest thing is simply being able to wrestle a story into existence from an idea. To get it out of your head and onto the page. Taking that rough nugget that's appeared in your mind without warning (conjured from the unknowable Land of Inspiration), to worry at it for weeks or months, to write a draft, realise it doesn't work, agonise over it, rewrite it, rewrite it again and finally arrive a story that makes you happy, or at least satisfied.

However, the million pound publishing contract would be nice. (less)

Get to the baths, change, lock my clothes in a locker, swim for 30 minutes (I never counted lengths), out, shower, dry, change and off to the office.

One day, I emerged after my 30 minutes, showered, opened my locker, got out my towel and some clothes and started to dry myself. When I turned around my bag had disappeared from the locker: wallet, phone, iPad etc and my shirt. The changing rooms were very busy. Nobody saw them taken.

I reported everything to the police. Cancelled cards. Reorganised my life. Grumbled and griped.

The following morning the sports centre called me to say my bag had been found in another locker in a different part of the changing room.

When I collected it my belongings were all there - phone, credit cards, iPad - but my shirt was missing.

It was a nice shirt. But not that nice. So was it really a shape-changing alien that had become trapped in the shape of blue and white dog-toothed check shirt only to be released by the touch of chlorinated water?

Are there more sentient shirts out there?

Maybe. (less)
