I have finished Do Better (https://shiradest.wordpress.com/pubs-...), a 70 year plan for a kinder world.

I am now back to outlining the scenes for a Historical urban Fantasy, working title: #WhoByFireIWill, which I hope to pitch next year. Tagline and Story/Logline will happily be given if anyone cares to ask! :-)

Passing To Freedom, Chapter 25: Unjust Laws

Chapter 25

We had both seen, it, young Tilly and I, of that much I was certain.

“Don’t look.”

Even though I used one hand to cover the eyes of little Tilly, I could tell that the child had seen the horror. I had urged Old Mary into a trot, hoping to pass by the whipping post unseen and unseeing, but I knew I had failed, by the way both of our hearts stopped. That had indeed been my poor Miss Mary, up

SDAntoNia is on page 349 of 472 of The Three-Body Problem: Now how could Evan's possibly have insisted that the aliens were supposed to be coming to reform humanity, when he himself believes that humanity is no better than the bugs or the bacteria that bother us? Species egalitarianism would mean you can't eat anything and you certainly can't use pesticides, herbicides or even antibiotics, by his strict rules.

"So this book.

I love this book for what it did for bringing animal rights into the semi-mainstream. Singer was a proper philosopher, not (just) a kookie hippie. His importance cannot be overstated.

But it wasn’t a shocking or profound read for me perso" Read more of this review »

Mary Renault
“It is better to believe in men too rashly, and regret, than believe too meanly. Men could be more than they are, if they would try for it. He has shown them that.”
Mary Renault, The Persian Boy

Lee Child
“People, Reacher was certain about. Dogs were different. People had freedom of choice. If a man or a woman ran snarling toward him, they did so because they chose to. They were asking for whatever they got. His response was their problem. But dogs were different. No free will. Easily misled. It raised an ethical problem. Shooting a dog because it had been induced to do something unwise was not the sort of thing Reacher wanted to do.”
Lee Child, Die Trying

Carter G. Woodson
“If you can control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. If you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the back door. He will go without being told; and if there is no back door, his very nature will demand one.”
Carter Godwin Woodson, The Mis-Education of the Negro

Frederick Douglass
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
Frederick Douglass

Jacqueline Carey
“There's more to clothing than just adornment. It does more than merely change how the world perceives us. It changes how we perceive ourselves.”
Jacqueline Carey, Naamah's Kiss
