Although I have always enjoyed writing, life, earning a living and other responsibilities got in the way for many years. Occasionally though I would write another short story or poem and it would go in the bottom drawer. On rare occasions, something would be published.

I started writing The Red Heart in 1988, hence you will pick up subtle references to the fact that it is not set in current times. It is not in any way autobiographical, but I lived in Alice Springs for seven years and also learnt to fly whilst there. That gave me the background for writing the book.

Initially, I thought it would be a stand-alone book, but then I wanted to tell Sarah’s story as well, and that was followed by Melissa’s story.

I’ve moved around a bit since leaving

Avoid the fridge or the kitchen at all costs!

I find if I switch to handwriting instead of typing, it gets the ideas flowing again. Going for a walk also helps, and of course the exercise is great. Sometimes I just jot down dot points or interrogate my characters:
"Why did you say that? What were you thinking? What did you do next? How did you feel when you heard that?"
The answers to those questions get me writing again.

The Evolution of The Red Heart

In the years I lived in Alice Springs, it never occurred to me to write a book based in that location. I lived there seven years, started a couple of businesses, built a house and learnt to fly. None of The Red Heart is autobiographical, but my experiences whilst in the Northern Territory certainly influenced the book.

Learning to fly was something that I’d always wanted to do, but it seemed an imp Read more of this blog post »

One helliva cat

Enjoyed the adventures- made a long train journey pass quickly. Some snicker out loud moments, even if I was astonished at the shit food Sloth keeps eating. I want a cat like Rookie.
Skywalkers by Dorothy Shorne
"It's a cozy mystery about a guy and his cat. It was very lighthearted and a fun read.

I received a copy for free from hiddengem and chose to leave a review"
