Who said anything about need? ; )
Perhaps an AI whose core purpose was to protect human life, would consider that the only way of endure would be to diminish earth population. Or, whatever, if being turned off resulted in it failing its purpose, then it protect itself not in the basis of fear of death, but to avoid obstacles in its mission.
