judith What carnival & what comment about "heroin addicts?" I don't remember that.

K ONE: I loved the book (but listened to it read by Meryl Streep). TWO: I thought the sentence was funny not shocking “…and then get on one of those god-awful rides that had been put together by three heroin addicts with a sprocket wrench…”. Why do you think it’s shocking?

Amy Kasprzak It is shocking to me to make fun of people suffering with heroin addiction. This prolongs the stigma that people with addiction are losers/bad people. They(heroin addicts) would be causing one of her daughters to die.
My son suffered with heroin addiction for 20 years after being prescribed god awful Purdue pain pills at age 15 when a person’s brain is not mature physically or psychologically. He was addicted right away. Unless someone experiences this, you would never understand the pure hell he went through. And people don’t understand the disease.
People not understanding the disease tend to make fun of it and judge those suffering with it. And believe me, people with addiction feel bad enough about themselves. This stigma causes so much damage.
That’s why I think it is shocking. Do you get what I am saying?

judith Yes, I get what you're saying, but think you took this on a far too personal level. That said, I wouldn't want anyone in any kind of altered state putting a carnival ride together, & that's what she was saying.
