“There’s two things about that reference: one is a real science thing, and the other is a veiled reference to another book called Multiverse which is actually Alicia Yoder’s first real POV role. Reading that book might give some insight on what caused the memory gaps. However, let’s focus a bit on the science aspect of the topic known as the multiverse. The existence of a multiverse is something that has been debated in the physics community for years. A hypothesis that there are many (possibly infinite) copies of our universe that all exist in parallel to each other. Take the sum total of all the matter, energy, time, and space in all of these universes, and you have the “multiverse.” Although the idea has long been popular in science fiction and fantasy novels, many well-regarded figures in the scientific community (e.g. Stephen Hawking and Michio Kaku) are supporters of the concept. A related theory, known as counterpart theory, hypothesizes that in multiple copies of a given world, each item or event is not necessarily identical, but a copy in which variability may exist. Taking it one step further, there is something known as “many-worlds interpretation.” This is a mechanism by which one can conceive that the actual world we live in is but one of many possible worlds. And more to the point, for each different way the world could have evolved, there is a distinct and separate world that represents that outcome. If that seems confusing, welcome to the multiverse.”

“New Arcadia?” Alicia asked. “Yes, that is one of them. It was a hidden facility that conducted medical research. It doesn’t matter the specifics of the research other than to say a terrible mistake was made during the time that the facility was last active. “It turns out that there was some kind of breach in protocol that resulted in the release of a toxic strain of organism.” “Organism?” Alicia frowned. “You mean like an animal?” “No, more like a virus, but I’m unclear on the details of such a thing, to be honest. My background isn’t in medical research. I suppose you could look at it as the same level of breach as what had happened in Wuhan with the Covid virus. Regardless of how it escaped, the fact is that it did, and whatever it was, it was virulent and deadly.”

“Are you familiar with the term ‘multiverse’?” he continued. Alicia nodded. “Sure. It’s the idea that any possible choice you make at any moment creates an entire new universe of possibilities—which basically means that other universes exist that play out for every different choice you could have made in your life. It’s like alternate history lines all existing at once.”

“This is a good place to practice your social skills. I come here to keep myself sharp. You and I are a lot more alike than you might think. I’m not naturally a social butterfly, but if I have to turn on the charm, I can. It’s a learned behavior. The more you practice the better you’ll be at it, just like anything else.”
