“Are you okay?" King Warren asked. "Are you wounded?"
I shook my head but I was lost for words. His dark eyes searched over me as if trying to find an open wound or any blood dripping. His jaw relaxed when he saw that I was okay. He saved my life, I thought.”

“I was a good thief; I moved quickly and with agility, and I was never caught. But I had never been a warrior.”

“Why did you bring me here?" I asked quickly.
The king smiled. "Just to talk," he said as he took a step toward me. "I'm only trying to to get to know the stranger that has taken a step inside the palace walls."
"Well, have you been able to learn anything about me, then?" I asked, raising my chin and staring at his dark eyes, causing an unpleasant smile to form on his face.
"Not quite yet.”

“What about us?" I said as I straightened my back. "Are you also scared of the Protectors?"
"Not from you.”

“I couldn't be eased by lies; I had to face the reality in all its bitterness.”

“I just thought that you wouldn't want to leave King Warren alone on his birthday."
Lady Bria's expression was as cold as ice and then she knit her thin eyebrows. "I thought you were keeping him company," she said as she pointed out the ballroom. "You looked like you were enjoying yourself.”

“You act spoiled," I said, very annoyed. "All those rumors were indeed true."
"So bold," I heard him murmur. But his expression grew bigger; the king was smiling now. "That is exactly what I am. I am a king and today is my birthday.”

“You can't buy me with nice words or expensive gifts, Your Majesty," I said as I pointed out the silk dress I was wearing. "If that is all for keeping me under control, it won't work."
He shrugged. "At least you can't tell me you didn't like it.”

“You look...well."
"Because I am behaving the way you want?" I asked with a sarcastic tone. But I knew I did. And that was what he wanted from me. Act like a Protector who had been living in the palace. Not to be an outsider.
"Because," I heard him say before annoyingly taking a deep breath. "You look beautiful and you are actually enjoying yourself just like them." He pointed out the group of nobles on the other side of the room.
I glared at him. "Is that a compliment? If so, that was terrible."
King Warren's hand went back to his neck and he cleared his throat. "Only the truth.”

“I may now be a Protector that serves you, but you can never restrain me. You may try punishing me. Do whatever you want; you can never chain me.”
