“Umrym was her home by birth, dragons her race by chance, but it was through the race of men that she was meant to fulfill her purpose.”

“The great spire at the eastern side was the only building that stood above ground, though the rear of it pressed against a mountainside. The rest of the block-like structures always reminded Wes of the lids of great stone caskets, buried halfway in the rocky valley floor. The bulk of the city was underground, the tops of buildings poking through the stone only for the purpose of ventilation and surface entrances. Dwarves did not much like to spend time overground. Neither did the dragons—not in these days.”

“Even the winds that usually screamed across the mountains had gone quiet, dulled by the walls of the valley. The dwarf guide did not attempt any jokes or spouting of trivia, perhaps sensing the general mood that had settled over the Envoy’s company. Will our sacrifice be accepted? The worries rushed over him before he could stop them. Has it been accepted at all in these five dark years? Or have the Dracodei turned away from us? He had no way of knowing. For the moment, there was only the steady march of man, dwarf, and deer, the chime of clinking treasures, and the silent sky uninterrupted by the beat of dragon’s wings.”

“Not a single dragon in the sky this time. He found the whole thing disconcerting. While it was true that the dragons spent much of their time in their vast underground caverns, they normally spent time in the air as well, patrolling the skies of Umrym and flying over the rest of Kaveryth now and then. They used to, anyway. Until five years ago. I would swear it was nearly to the day… He refused to think about it, refused to dwell upon the evils that had befallen him. He couldn’t bear to. Especially now.”

“The spire stood at the center of the world, watching everything, presiding over the birth of babies and the death of old men. Wes Cervos looked toward it, across the city of Whitespire, as he crested the craggy gray ridge. He should have been waiting for his two companions—a Witness by the name of Odrigh, this time from Galeharbor, and his own Deermaster—but he had gone on ahead. It was a special place. He needed to look upon it alone, even if only for a moment. They would reach him soon, their ascent up the mountain burdened by the vast amount of wealth they carried in gold and jewel, but it was enough. Wes had been making the journey to the only overground city in Umrym once a season for as long as he could remember, but it never lost its magic. For a moment, just a breath or two, standing there at the edge of divine things, the slightly pudgy boy of seventeen felt himself the hero that an Envoy was supposed to be.”
