“Edward Liveing would have worn fibre identity discs like these, they include service number, surname and initials, regiment, religion and sometimes battalion and rank. One tag was green and eight-sided, the second was round and red. If the holder was killed the red tag would be removed, leaving the green tag still in place on the body. Others subsequently finding the body with only a green tag would know that the death was already being reported. The information on the green tag could be used to prepare a grave marker.”
