“We are given the assignment to live in an uncertain mortal state. We can keep the commandments and have some certainty---at least about pitfalls the commandments would help us avoid. And we can receive the promptings of the Spirit and have direction in a given moment as to what we should do. But as to bonus blessings---our hearts’ yearnings in addition to the information in the commandments and the directions of the spirit---we must trust in the ultimate. That which we would design for ourselves here on earth may or may not be included. We can be sure of the climax, but the [conclusion] is not ours to know. It is somewhat like a good novel. If we know the author and see the strengths and weaknesses of the well-drawn characters in the plot, it may be clear to us how the book will end, but the twists and turns of how it gets there---that is still totally unpredictable, and well worth the read. Life is like that. If we are wise, we will find our testimony of the outcome comfort enough and not bemoan the unknowns as we go along.”
