“He’d scavenged two tubes—one long, one shorter—from Dr. Laudé’s shed. Once he’d found a car with gas in its tank, an older Toyota, he inserted the longer tube into the gas tank until it was submerged and shoved the other end into the empty jerrycan on the ground. He inserted the shorter tube into the tank and used a damp rag to make a seal around the plastic tubes and the tank opening. He blew into the short tube to create high air pressure inside the gas tank, forcing the gasoline through the longer tube and into the waiting canister.”

“Sometimes you can love a person, and it’s like sending all that love into a black hole. Doesn’t mean your love wasn’t good enough. Doesn’t mean you weren’t good enough. You hear me, girl?”

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much they were loved or how right they were raised; the decisions a person makes are selfish and wicked to the core. They choose to hurt other people. Sometimes there’s a reason, and sometimes there isn’t.” Quinn blinked back the sudden wetness in her eyes. “The thing you need to remember is the fault lies with the person who made those choices and took those actions. Octavia did what she wanted to do, and that had nothing to do with you. There was nothing you could have done to make her different. To make her love you. Believe me, girl, I tried.” Gran had never said so much about”

“Every human being on this planet has free will. God gave us that free will. It’s a gift and it’s a curse. We each make our own decisions. And once we reach a certain age, we are responsible for those decisions. “Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much they were loved or how right they were raised; the decisions a person makes are selfish and wicked to the core. They choose to hurt other people. Sometimes there’s a reason, and sometimes there isn’t.”

“He showed her how to develop situational awareness. How to scan her surroundings, stay alert, and watch for anything out of place. Hearing and smell were equally important. He taught her to recognize the normal scents and sounds of every building she was in. Buildings had their own rhythms, sounds, and smells. She needed to learn what was normal, so she would recognize it if something changed.”

“How do I rack it one-handed?” He pointed to a magazine-covered end table between two sets of chairs. “Put the area near the front sight on the table edge and push down. You can do it with the edge of something hard—a counter, holster, or the heel of your boot.”

“I can’t believe I almost forgot about this one.” Gran pointed to a galvanized steel trash can in the corner. The lid was sealed with conductive tape. “Gramps made it. It’s a homemade Faraday cage. The lid is super tight. He lined it with cardboard and extra aluminum foil on the inside for extra protection.” The Faraday cage would have protected the electronics inside from the EMP. It took a few minutes for Quinn to get it open. She set the lid aside and pulled out a hand-crank radio, a pair of walkie talkies, a couple of LED flashlights, and a Kindle e-reader. “That e-reader is full of reference and survival books. Medicinal herbs, edible plants, wilderness first aid, how to survive nuclear fallout, how to build a spring house and a latrine. And the Bible, of course. The usual beach read fare.”

“anyway, if it comes to it, we can always eat the cats.” Gran whipped her cane around and smacked Quinn on her butt before she could dart out of the way. “More likely, I’ll eat the sassy human first.”

“No. I think there’s no such thing as normal. I think things just looked that way on the outside. Everybody pretending things were good and okay, but they never were. Everybody was barely holding on. Balancing on ice that was thin and cracking, but no one wanted to admit it. Now everything looks the way it really does—ugly.”

“He maintained a full grip on the knife handle, curling his thumb around the handle instead of leaving it up and exposed to potential injury. It was also more difficult for an attacker to take the knife away. Not that Liam was worried about that with these jokers. Baseball Cap was the closest thug. He was taking a break from the beating and had stepped back to light a cigarette. His head was bowed, both his hands up and cupped around the cigarette at his mouth. His baseball bat leaned against the opened door of the truck. Out of reach. Liam took several swift and silent strides. He approached Baseball Cap from behind, grabbed his head, and drove the knife upwards from the top of his spine into his brain. Baseball Cap dropped like a stone, instantly dead. The cigarette dangled from his dead lips. Liam stepped back and let him fall. It took a second for the two remaining hostiles to react. Liam didn’t waste that second. The man in the hunting cap whirled, a startled look on his face. He started to raise his baseball bat, but Liam was already on him. He smashed into the man’s chest and drove him back into the side of the Chevy. Hunter let out a pained oomph. The third hostile would be reacting now, too, ready to charge Liam at any second. He needed to move fast. Hunter pummeled at his ribs. Liam took the blows. Hunter tried to push him off, shove him away so he could get some leverage and get a good punch in, use the baseball bat. Liam didn’t let him. Using his left arm to deflect any potential blows, he used his right hand to slash the knife across the side of the hostile’s throat, severing his carotid artery. He stepped back fast but the arterial spray still got him. Hunter slid down the side of the truck, flailing, gasping. He’d be dead in a few minutes.”
