“handwritten letter or a phone call, or it can be as significant as rewarding a coworker with a trip for their dedication and hard work. Gratitude can take many forms, but it can be effortless. It only takes a second to say “thank you” and mean it.”

“The research found companies that give back to the community have higher employee retention, brand ambassadorship, and employee enthusiasm.12 Moreover, employees at organizations that give back are thirteen times more likely to look forward to coming to work.13 Again, even if I did not sincerely believe in the law of vibrational giving and had not reaped the rewards it brought, I would still instill a culture of giving in my companies, as it is proven to increase performance. Giving is, therefore, good business.”

“Most people, when asked about their goals, are not sure of their goals or cannot articulate them in a clearly defined manner. Part of my success in business has come from teaching my employees how to dream and identify their goals through a goal-setting exercise: Write down all the things you don’t want in life. Once you have nothing left to write, draw a line after the last thing you don’t want in life. Then, on a new sheet of paper, write the opposite of what you just wrote. For example, if you wrote, “I don’t want to be poor,” then on your new sheet of paper write, “I want to be rich.” If you wrote, “I don’t want to be alone,” then write the opposite, “I want to be in a relationship.” And so on: I don’t want to be sick—I want to be healthy. I don’t want to be stuck here forever—I want to travel and see new things. Once you have completed your opposite list, make a third list: “What can I start doing today?” This list is meant to bring specifics to each thing you do want in life. For example, “What can I do today that I enjoy and will make me wealthy?” Alternatively, “If I don’t want to be lonely, what kind of activities, work, and hobbies could I do today that would allow me to have a great social presence and love life?” Or, “If I want to be healthy, what sports or exercises would I enjoy that will impact my health positively?” Once you have created the “What Can I Do Today?” list, circle the top five sentences that inspire you the most and add a reasonable timeline to take action toward these goals. Then, circle the next five and so on until everything is circled with deadlines. Keep your final list accessible so that as you begin to take action, you can adjust your list’s details and timelines. Thinking about what you don’t want and about changing that into what you do want creates a foundation for building goals with real intent and action. It also trains you to live in positivity. This is more than positive thinking. Science supports goal setting.”

“Negative people with an aversion to learning need to be cut from your team immediately. Not only does this ensure that negativity will not settle into your organization, but it also sets an example for the other employees. They will see you honor a culture of positivity and that it is nonnegotiable. One of the most difficult things to do is separate yourself”

“Andres, just because they don’t read the books you suggest or try the goal-setting exercises or visualization exercises you recommend, it does not mean they are not a team player.” To be clear, when I ask an employee to read a book or take part in an exercise, I am not asking them to follow my beliefs blindly. I am not asking them to give up their opinion. I am not asking them to mimic or parrot anything they read. I am asking them to be open to possibilities and new ways of thinking, because those are both crucial elements to success, both personally and as part of a team. I am asking them to try something new and see how it works for them. I am asking them to take part in a team culture, allowing me to see how open they are to the ideas of others, how much they are willing to participate in growing”

“When you are trying to grow your business, letting your best performer go can be very difficult and can impact sales temporarily. It shouldn’t matter to you. Always value positivity over results. “After I hire someone and take the time to help them create their own goals, I then see what I can do to make sure they succeed; it is the first way employees recognize my investment in them. I take their goals and put them up in the office, so everyone can see who is striving to do what.”

“What if I flew Nenny’s daughter to Thailand and put her in school and then Nenny quit? It certainly could happen. I’ve also heard that paying for an employee’s child’s education is not a good use of company money. I don’t see it this way. How many things do we as business owners invest in for the long term believing they will return big dividends?”

“I decided to invest in her as an employee in a very nontraditional way. I call it an investment because I was viewing the relationship as a long-term success. I needed to contribute to that long-term success long before I would experience the results for myself. I offered her the job because I had seen how dedicated she was to her previous employer. I knew that I wanted to gain her trust right away. I took the time to learn more about Nenny and found out the details of her daughter and their relationship. This new-found knowledge allowed me to offer Nenny a long-term agreement. I agreed that if she came to work for me and continued to be dedicated and trustworthy, I would not only fly her daughter to Thailand but I would pay for her daughter to go to an international school until she”

“After I listen to my employees’ goals, I then ask follow-up questions to help propel them. I ask things like, “What do you think you can do this week to meet that goal?” followed with, “Okay, what about this month, next month, this year?” I like to show my employees that they can act now to fulfill those goals and that sometimes there are little goals, small things, we can accomplish throughout the next few months to obtain those big goals as well.”
