I think that was it. At least that was it during those college days. I think Nep was listening… eager—eager to discover himself through discovering me.
I don’t fault myself for not seeing it at the time. He was so strikingly unique—so colorful and heartfelt and firm in his opinions—that I never could have guessed that underneath, he was still scrambling to find out who he was.
I guess most people are, during college—trying to wiggle their way into themselves, trying on different versions, seeing what fits.
I guess some people are always doing that, even after college.
I guess some people spend their entire lives doing that—searching and squirming and chasing after that most elusive of all prizes: Identity.”
