“I’d got to the stage where I’d lost so much interest in what I was doing that I started to find it hard to know what I was doing. I’d promise numbers, reports and results and then ignore the tasks completely. When I would talk to other people about my work I would even bore myself.
It’s not like I could have gotten another job. I believed I was past my prime without anything new to offer. While to the outside world I might have passed for a man like any other but inside me ran a powerful river of anxiety, panic and hopelessness. At lunch I would sneak off to the pub at the quiet end of the high street for a pint to calm down the nerves.”
