“I’m far from a pacifist. Although intellectually I bow to diplomats and diplomacy, I’m built and wired to grab the bull by the horns. A man of action, you might say. But I’m also disciplined. Logic driven. And I have a deep affinity for fairness. So when I see injustice occurring, I tend to wade in.”

“We’ve confirmed the Stanford prison experiment.” Bruce crinkled his brow, then took a sip of coffee. “The one where they arbitrarily split students into either prisoners or guards?” Danica nodded. “And each student seamlessly assumed his or her assigned role—to the point where the guards were enforcing authoritarian measures and subjecting their fellow students to psychological torture.”

“Basher and the other smug patrons around his four-hundred-dollar-per-plate table, the next he was headed for Nevada.” “What’s in Nevada?” Seb asked. “Beyond Vegas? Not much,” Webb replied. Danica didn’t find that encouraging. It was practically cliché, the desperado heading to Vegas to roll the dice and either win big or end it all with a rooftop dive. She quickly dismissed the depressing thought. Surely her husband—her brilliant, insightful, courageous husband—was more resilient than that. “Are you angry?” Bruce asked, walking into the room and catching them all by surprise. “Yes,” Danica replied in concert with her colleagues, buoyed by her husband’s exuberant tone. “Are you prepared to take action? To reclaim your rightful rung on the socioeconomic ladder?” Bruce continued, gesturing enthusiastically. “Yes,” they all replied. “Bold action?” Bruce clarified. “Yes!” “Decisive action?” “Yes!” “Are you prepared to stoop to the level required to win? To get dirty? To take risks? To use every tool at your disposal to outwit the people and the system that effectively just stole the last six years of your life?” Again, Danica found herself saying, “Yes!”

“Bruce was so smart as to make interactions with normal folk analogous to what the rest of us went through when working with dogs. It had to be frustrating and isolating.”

“I was expecting to find a scooter company. One of those trendy, battery-powered skateboard or Segway-like rolling transporters used in place of walking. What I found was something entirely more audacious. PPS was developing a jetpack. An actual jetpack. One of those James Bond, Buck Rogers, Rocket Man-style engines you strapped to your back and flew with. I supposed the Space Coast location should have been a tipoff, but I missed that clue. The PPS website was just a Work In Progress placeholder, but I did find a few other companies in the niche, and one had a very impressive video. It showed a man flying over rivers and lakes using a device that looked exactly like what the comic books predicted. At first I thought it was faked, but it proved to be real. USA Today confirmed it in a front page story on November 11, 2015 titled “Man on jetpack flies around Statue of Liberty.” That meant the core Iron Man technology had existed for years. If a fatal flaw hadn’t been found, it would now be in the refinement and regulatory approval stage. It occurred to me that between jetpacks and drones and hover boards and self-driving cars, the Department of Transportation had to be hopelessly swamped. The world was evolving at an incredible pace. It was no wonder that so many people”
