“Elizabeth’s queenly reign lasted forty-four years in a time when the reign of kings or queens could sometimes last less than a year, and certainly usually no more than ten. Hers was an age in which England prospered not only financially, but also spiritually, socially, and creatively. The time of her rule is best known as the Elizabethan Era, or the Golden Age. Her singular dedication to the betterment of her kingdom produced some of the greatest advancements for her people that they had seen in hundreds of years. Not only was Queen Elizabeth I the wife of her kingdom, but she was also the mother of its people, having said to Parliament, “Though after my death you may have many step dames, yet shall you never have a more natural mother unto you all.” Queen Elizabeth I used her freedom from marriage to fully maximize not only her life on earth, but also the lives of countless others. She truly was a kingdom single who committed herself to fully and freely maximizing her completeness under the rule of God. Single reader, you have also been gifted a season that offers a unique freedom to function in a way that contributes to God’s kingdom as well. Is there a direct correlation between what you do every day and the calling you have to fulfill God’s purpose in your life? Or are you allowing the world to distract you from your kingdom calling and function? Before we dive deeper into your personal calling, let’s first look at the nature of the kingdom and the rule of God so we have the context within which to place your personal calling.”

“She was only 24 years old when a crown was placed on her head, signifying the start of her reign as queen. Her father, Henry VIII, had served as king in a tumultuous rule that saw the beheading of not only Elizabeth’s mother, but of another of his wives as well. When Elizabeth attained her rightful place as queen, following the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I, she made a purposeful decision to remain single. Despite multiple efforts by advisors from within and royal leaders from without to connect her in a marriage of political convenience, Elizabeth stood her ground. In fact, one time when Parliament was pushing yet again to persuade her to marry and bear an heir to the throne, Elizabeth replied in a stately manner, “I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband, namely, the kingdom of England.” Well aware of her personal convictions, power, and influence, and how those might be jeopardized by marriage, Elizabeth embraced not only her singleness, but also her celibacy. She is recorded as having said to Parliament, “It would please me best if, at the last, a marble stone shall record that this queen, having lived such and such a time, lived and died a virgin.”

“When God created the earth, He demonstrated His genius simply through His Word. Whatever He spoke came into being. Not only did it come into being, but it was also good. In five days, God had created a spectacular earth with all the nuances and idiosyncrasies necessary for life to be lived out to its fullest. On the sixth day, God spoke forth His crowning achievement—humanity. About humanity, we read that first, “God said” (Genesis 1:26), then, “God created” (Genesis 1:27), and next, “God blessed” (Genesis 1:28). God said it, God created it, and God blessed it. Obviously, this is how God intended it. Because we are about to tread into some delicate territory, I don’t want you to just take my word for it—take His. Also in Genesis 1 we read, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule’” (Genesis 1:26). On the sixth day, God created man in His own image. Both “male and female” were made in the image of God and given rulership. The plurality of “Let Us” and “Our image” refers to God’s Trinitarian nature, indicating the fullness of function found in the creation of humanity as a reflection of Him. Mankind was uniquely created to mirror God’s rule in the visible, physical world as it exists in the invisible, spiritual realm.”

“If you could be a fly on the wall of my office the numerous times I counsel married couples, you would hear the same word I hear over and over and over again: Trapped. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked to help married couples not feel so trapped. One husband came to me after only six months of marriage, already saying he felt trapped and wanted out.”

“What Satan likes to do with singles is the same thing he did with Adam and Eve. In getting them to focus on the one tree they couldn’t have (the boundary line), he led them to miss out on all the trees they could have (the playing field). Satan loves to get singles to focus on the one thing they don’t have (usually marriage, or it could even be sex), and they wind up missing out on maximizing, experiencing, and enjoying all they do have. Yet one of the most beautiful things about singleness is that you are fully free.”

“Friend, from a biblical standpoint, you should be living it up as a single. Adam was supposed to be living it up as a single. He was supposed to be spending so much time having fun in the garden, because there was so much given to him that he was commanded to freely enjoy. Being all you were created to be and fully living your life is a command. You’d better enjoy yourself. You’d better express yourself. You’d better be all you can be, because it’s a command. So if you’re a boring, stuck-at-home, not-enjoying-life single, you’re disobeying God—literally disobeying Him and setting yourself up for temptation on the one tree you’re not supposed to mess with.”

“If you’re looking for a romantic partner to complete you as a kingdom single, you really don’t understand what Jesus Christ has already done. Because in Him, you are as complete as complete comes. Now, you may not realize that truth. You may not identify with that truth. And if you don’t, you’re not living out the full benefits of that truth. But none of those things makes the truth any less true. Colossians 2:10 tells us, “In Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority.” To think otherwise is to make the institution of marriage, and your desire for a marriage partner, an idol. And idolatry is sin.”
