“Lucas would be home at any minute and would probably destroy something on the way. I went to my room and closed the door, then sat down on my bed and ate the cookies. The chocolate melted in my mouth, and I began to relax. At least if I was taking the following day off, I didn’t have to rush through all my homework. That idea quickly disappeared. I’d have to try double as hard on my homework to make sure each answer was correct. I didn’t want a repeat of the Math exam. Sighing, I opened my backpack, tossing my books beside me. I organized them by subject and started with my English assignment. Thoughts of Ali filtered through my head, but I was able to push them away for the time being. As the next day was Friday, I wouldn’t have to see her until the following week, and I wasn’t going to have annoying thoughts of her ruin my day off.”

“He’s so cute!” I heard her gush. “Don’t you think he’s the best-looking boy in our grade?” They all took turns at guessing who he liked. That was until one of the girls, I couldn’t tell who, shushed the others and mentioned Ali by name. They assumed she—meaning me—was asleep but didn’t want “her” to wake up and hear them talking about Jake. I smiled against my pillow. It had been obvious to everyone that Jake preferred Ali and possibly liked her, well me. It was all so confusing. Maybe it would be best if I told him outright that he’d been hanging out with me instead of Ali. At least we could start our friendship off properly, and he’d see that he really preferred me over her. I was sure Ali wouldn’t mind, she didn’t like him that way anyway.”

“That’s my friend, Jasmine,” he said, leaning closer to me. His breath tickled my cheek. “Your friend?” I asked curiously. “Yeah,” he said. “She plays here all the time. Looks like she’s doing well tonight. She has a heap of money in her guitar case.” I wondered how well he knew her? Did he bring me here knowing this is where she’d be? She was such a pretty girl and he probably knew her a lot better than he knew me. “She has a great voice,” I said, trying to stifle my envy. “Yeah, she does,” Zye replied, his eyes still locked on hers. “She’s amazing.” As I stood beside him, I found myself just as taken by her voice as Zye was. Her fingers flicked over the guitar strings as if she were playing a harp. The movements were smooth and gentle, creating a steady rhythm that put me at ease. I didn’t recognize the music or the lyrics. But it didn’t matter that it wasn’t familiar and I began to understand Zye’s fascination with her. As her song continued, I wondered about her.”

“my spot in the back seat. It was the same look and phrase that everyone gave me. It happened at the funeral and it had happened every day since. I’d learned to hate that pitying look as well as the reassuring words that people spoke. Neither eased my mind in the slightest. I just wished that Mrs. Williams pitied me enough to leave me where I wanted to be instead of with strangers. When the car slowed, I peered at the house that I’d now be living in for who knew how long. I took in the untidy façade in disgust. It was hard to see much through the overgrown trees and garden that spilled out over the pavement. The long grass seemed to be springing up from the ground like weeds. They probably were weeds. How could Mrs. Williams think that this mess of a house was a good place for me? She parked the car and jumped out. Her heels clicked over the pavement as she opened the gate at the bottom of the driveway. The fence was a dirty shade of white and chipped in many places. She got back into the car and I noticed she was panting slightly. “Okay, here we go,” she said.”

“She and Holly had come into the bathroom together and they both opened their mouths in surprise. Casey jumped and then looked at me. My mind went blank. I thought no one ever used this bathroom. That’s what Casey had said. Or maybe today was our unlucky day. Casey and I looked at each other, then we looked at Ronnie and Holly. I had to think quickly on my feet. “You misheard, Ronnie,” I said, “she said we’re like twins. You know, because we look alike.” “That’s not what you said,” Holly said. “Ali’s right,” Casey said. “It’s what I meant. How would we be twins? We have different parents. I mean it is a coincidence that we look alike but that doesn’t mean anything.” Casey was rambling, but it seemed to work. The girls quickly lost interest and turned to the mirrors to fix their hair. They started talking among themselves about the fair on the weekend, while Casey and I slipped out the door. The first morning bell rang as we entered the hallway. “Wow! That was close!” Casey exclaimed. “I know. I really don’t want anyone to know about us being sisters until I tell my parents. I’m not sure how they’d find out from any of the kids at school but I’d feel better if I told them in case they do hear it from someone else.” “I totally get that,” Casey said. “I promise not to say anything to anyone. Let me know if you want me to come with you to talk to them, though. Like I said, I had such a great time with them this weekend. They really are lovely people. And they’re such great cooks!” I smiled. I was so lucky to have them in my life. But I was luckier to have a twin sister and a little brother now as well. I wished we could go home early and I could get this over with. But that wasn’t possible. I’d have to wait.”
