“The true child of God does not have great strength in himself. He is strong at times in Christ”
Joel R. Beeke, Revelation
“Spurgeon borrowed an illustration from Ambrose to compare Christ’s work as sanctifier of His people’s prayers to the work of a mother. Her little child returns from the woods with a bouquet of flowers that he plans to give to his father. The mother sees that all kinds of weeds are mixed with the flowers, so she quickly takes out the weeds and adds more flowers. Then the mother and child present the bouquet to the father. Likewise, Christ takes the weeds out of our prayers. He sanctifies our prayers by cleansing them with His blood and adding His own superior petitions. Then He presents this offering to the Father. Spurgeon writes: “If we could see one of our prayers after Christ Jesus has amended it, we should scarce know it again. He has such skill that even our good flowers grow fairer in his hand; we clumsily tie them into a bundle, but he arranges them into a [beautiful] bouquet.”3”
