“Head tilted, Lou looked at her curiously. “Are you… are you trying to appeal to my conscience?” He snorted. “That inner voice gave up on me a long time ago. Honestly, trying to make me feel bad is more pointless than the ‘ay’ in ‘okay’. If self-centeredness could bounce, I’d be in orbit. And wouldn’t that be fun?”
Harper sighed. “At least you’re honest about it.”
“My shrink says I shouldn’t hold things in or pretend to be what I’m not. He says I should just be myself.”
“Yeah, that was bad advice.”
“And yet, I have a fan club,” Lou said smugly. “Several.”
“You mean you have Satanic cults that worship you.”
“Yeah,” he muttered, seemingly unimpressed by them.”

“There are three stages to a demonic pregnancy. I call them infestation, oppression, and possession.”
She paused with the bottle close to her mouth. “Aren’t those the stages of demonic possession?”
Smiling, he shrugged. “Pregnancy is pretty much the same thing.”
“No, it’s really not.” She cocked her head. “Anyone ever told you that you have the oddest sense of humor?”
“Once or twice.”

“Did you know that in the dictionary, your name is under the word ‘bitch’?”

“Not sure why you’re smiling. I’m not the one who had to look up the word.”

“Knox rubbed her leg. “I didn’t think I’d ever have this. Someone who was mine. A child. A family. Didn’t see it coming.” His face hardened as he added, “I’ll fight to the death to protect and keep what we have.”

“Yeah.” Knox looked down at their son. “He looks like an ‘Asher’.”

“Another contraction came, and she dug her fingers into Knox’s arm.
“Okay, Harper, time to push again,” Sharon declared.
Harper pushed. There was a loud farting sound. Her mouth dropped open in mortification, but then Rodgers gave her a sheepish look and said, “Sorry about that. I had chicken korma before I came.”

“We’re keeping the pregnancy quiet for now, Lou,” Knox told him. “We need you to do the same.”
Lou lifted his hand, as if to pledge an oath. “You can be sure that I will do nothing to threaten the upcoming birth of our little Luc —”
“We are not calling the baby Lucifer,” growled Harper, fists clenched.
Lou leaned toward Knox and said quietly, “Notice the mood swing? The stats don’t lie.”
Harper let out a long breath. “Why are you even here?”
Lou lifted a brow. “Expecting someone else?”
“Preferably someone who doesn’t come uninvited, rifle through our kitchen, and help themselves to stuff. It’s like having a stray dog turn up all the time.”
Lou sniffed at her. “That’s unfair. I don’t shit on your floor.”

“Lou took one look at her round stomach and grinned like a loon. “Well, would you look at that.” He stood. “We’re gonna have a baby! Score!” He patted Knox’s back. “I knew you’d come through in the end.” Crossing to Harper, he bent down. “Well, hello there, baby Luc —”
“Don’t say it,” she snapped.”

“A moan slipped out of Harper as she began to tremble. “It’s like my blood’s sizzling.”
“Sizzling?” Rodgers echoed. “That doesn’t sound good.”
She scratched at her skin, eyes wide. “Shit, I feel like my veins are going to explode.”
“That’s not good either,” said Rodgers.
Knox’s hand tightened around the phone. “We’re fucking well aware that it’s not good.”

“And I’m not the only one who’ll never support his choice to have a Wallis for a mate,” clipped Alethea.
“Ooh, I cared for about a ninth of a second. Then I remembered how stupid and insignificant it is.”
Alethea leaned forward. “Did you know that in the dictionary, your name is under the word ‘bitch’?”
“Not sure why you’re smiling. I’m not the one who had to look up the word.”

“The lair needs to know.”
“Yeah, I know that, but I would have preferred it if we didn’t have to make a big thing out of it. It would have been easier to just ask you and the other sentinels to pass on the news.”
“You’re their Prime, and there are certain expectations that come with that position. Making public announcements about key information is one of them. Celebrating important events is another. Your pregnancy is both of those things.”
“Yes, but have you not seen how people respond to a pregnant woman?” By the way his brow furrowed, no, he hadn’t. “Everyone’s suddenly an expert on babies and they’re all full of advice and nosy-ass questions. I’m glad my stomach’s not that big – people are a hell of a lot worse if there’s a bump. They try rubbing it like it’s a damn genie-infested lamp.”
“Genie-infested?” he chuckled.
“You get my point.”

“From what Harper tells me, you were very brave. I will find the person who did this, okay? They’ll never bother you again. I just need you to tell me whatever you remember about him so that I can find him.”
Heidi’s little button nose wrinkled. “Well —”
“What did he look like?” Martina interrupted. “Tall? Short?”
“He was tall,” said Robbie. “He had broad shoulders.”
Heidi nodded. “He —”
“What about his hair?” said Martina. “Blond? Red? Brown? Black?”
Heidi opened her mouth to answer, but Robbie beat her to it. “He had a buzzcut.”
“Did he tell you his name?” Knox asked Heidi.
“Yes,” she replied. “He said it was —”
“He won’t have given her his real name,” Robbie scoffed. “He could be anyone. I’ve never seen him before.”
Heidi did a cute little growl. “Will someone please let me talk? Jeez.”
Harper bit her lip, stifling a smile. “They don’t mean to talk over you, Heidi-ho, they’re just anxious. Now what is it you’d like to say?”
“He said his name was Dean. I don’t know if it’s true. Check.” She pulled a brown leather wallet out of her pocket and handed it to Knox.
Jolene framed her face with her hands, smiling. “You fabulous little girl!”
Levi grinned and tugged on one of her ringlets. “You told him he was really tall in that shaky voice to make him bend down so you could rob him, didn’t you?”
She grinned back at him. “Uh-huh.”

“Harper shook her head. “Forget it. How about we just – oh God, no.”
Knox frowned. “What?” He tracked her gaze, and could only sigh.
In the doorway, Lou thrust his arms up in the air. “We have ourselves a baby.” Stalking forward, he pushed through the crowd until he reached Raini, who was still holding Asher. “Girl? Boy?”
“Boy,” Raini told him.
He turned to Knox and raised his hand. “Hey, up high!”
“Well, hello, Lou,” Jolene said from behind him.
Lou’s mouth tightened and he dropped his arm. “I’m still not talking to you, evil woman.”
Jolene rolled her eyes. “You really need to stop holding grudges. Besides, taking things personally when you’re dealing with an imp is utterly pointless and —”
“La, la, la, la, la, la, deaf ears.”
Harper just looked at him. “I can’t imagine what a joy it must be up there in your head.”

“Knox was buttoning his shirt a few days later when Harper walked into the closet, streaks of lemon paint on her face and clothes. She looked so damn cute that he had to smile. Then he noticed she was carrying a hamper. “What’s that you have there, baby?”
“It’s a gift basket from Lou.” She held up a card that read, ‘Some stuff for Baby L.’ “I found it on the dining room table.”
It was the third gift that Lou had sent. Knox sighed. “I’m not sure there’s any way to get him to stop.”
Harper pulled out little white hats, booties, bodysuits, mittens, and sleepsuits from the basket. As she unfolded one particular bodysuit, she sighed and then turned it to face him. It read, ‘This Baby Got Back.”

“You know,” began Harper, “I have the distinct feeling that finding out I’m pregnant may draw out the remaining Horsemen.” She looked at Knox. “What better way to make you lose all control than to take your pregnant mate from you?”
A muscle in Knox’s cheek ticked. “I know that, and I hate it.”
Yeah, so did she.”

“Knox paused with the fork halfway to Harper’s mouth, his forehead wrinkling. “You’re going to work?”
Harper arched a brow. “What, you thought I’d spend the rest of the pregnancy sitting around, twiddling my thumbs?”
“A man can dream.”

“You’re pregnant?” The words came out choked.
“It would seem so.”
He placed the stick on the table and stood. Her stomach dropped. Hell, she hadn’t expected him to walk out, but she’d give him space if it was what he needed. Her demon would prefer to just slap him.
Taking Harper by surprise, his hand cuffed her wrist and he gently pulled her to her feet. Then his hands were in her hair and his mouth was on hers. Hard. Hungry. Consuming her.
Freeing her mouth, Knox rested his forehead on hers and splayed a hand on her flat stomach. “You’re pregnant?”
She licked her lips. “I’m pregnant.”
He swallowed. “We’re not calling it Lucifer.”
A shaky laugh bubbled out of her.”
