“What if I run into a Creeper while I’m looking for the animal? What”
Mark Mulle, The Villager Detective Diaries (Book 1): Missing Chickens
“Day Four: A Fellow Mystery Lover Dear Diary, Today I went to school, and nothing extremely exciting happened. Things went along pretty normally, so I usually wouldn’t write about it. I mean, I could glue my math homework in here if I really wanted to, but that would hardly make for a thrilling diary entry. No, I’m writing today because I think I made a new friend. I don’t know if it was clear up until now, but I don’t really have many friends. I mean, my mom is probably my best friend. I talk to some people around class and at recess and stuff, but for the most part, I like to keep to myself. Sure, it’s fun to understand people from the gossip that my mom brings home, but for some reason, I never really got the hang of making friends and getting to know people on a personal level. Today something changed. While I was at lunch, I had my tray of food in front of me, and a book in front of my nose. This was a pretty normal thing for me to do, especially on meatloaf surprise day. The surprise was that no one knew what kind of meat was in the loaf. I picked at it with my fork for a little while, but once it started to move I decided that I was done. I started to read my book, but that’s when someone sat across from me.”

“Only someone with a key could have stolen it, but none of the keys were stolen. My family has no idea who would have stolen our chicken. I have a weird feeling about it too. It just feels like a mystery, that’s why I thought you’d like to hear about it.” “Sure, I guess,” I was bored. I finished eating lunch quickly”

“were doing in school and if we had any hobbies. We played some board games and watched a movie until Benny’s parents went to bed. When we were sure that they were asleep, we decided to sneak out to the neighbor’s farm. We sat next”

“I took a deep breath and hoped that my friends couldn’t find the pile, or else they would be in deep trouble. I’m glad that I didn’t go with them, but now I was worried about what they would do without me.”

“we could get a good look at it without burning down our hiding”

“My name is Jewels Jones, but for the purpose of this diary, I think I would like to go by Detective Jones. I’ve never written a diary before, but I heard that it’s a good way to get all of a person’s thoughts and secrets out on paper. I’m only ten, so I don’t have all that many secrets yet, but by the time that I fill up this diary’s pages, I’m sure that I’ll have more than a couple of things that I’d like to keep between myself and these pages. I also heard that a person can be whoever they want to be in a diary, but I think that I’ll just be myself. I mean, it’s not like I’m going to show this to anyone or anything like that; there’s no need to lie about it. Now that I’m writing this down, the detective thing I mentioned earlier might seem like a little bit of a lie, but let me explain. Ever since I learned how to read, which wasn’t actually that long ago, I have loved detective stories. I love that there’s some mystery to the world. I mean, there isn’t all that much mystery at my elementary school. Everyone knows that Robby ate Tory’s cookie, everyone saw it. Even though there’s not much excitement in my life, I like to read about the fairytale-like mysteries that involve my favorite characters.”

“I guess that Amber fought the toughest girl there and won, making sure that no one would mess with her.”
