“Finding Rest in This Season After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. —1 Peter 5:10 ESV We all experience different seasons throughout our lives—seasons of joy and celebration, of grief and despair, and of waiting and receiving. Some last for an instant, while others seem to go on forever. You may not be in the season you desire right now, but you can still find rest where you are. As humans, our instinct is to look toward the future. If you’re in a season of suffering or sadness, you’re hoping for a season of relief and celebration. But sometimes the Lord asks you to stay in a season—and it feels exhausting. Yet, dear one, He will give you a reprieve. God’s plan, though you may not understand it, is perfectly thought out. There is a reason you’re in this place at this time. Rest in the knowledge that the Lord is right there beside you. And He’s telling you, “I am in control. Don’t be afraid.” Rest in Him. Oh, God, thank You for being with me, both in the heights of joy and in the depths of sadness.”

“Rest While Waiting The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:7 Waiting is hard. It requires patience, total trust in the Lord, and more patience. Whether you’re waiting for a spouse, a child, an answer from God, or a job, the slow passing of time can feel excruciating. You long to do something. After all, doing something will move things along, right? Remember that God’s plans are perfect. He knows your next step in the most vivid detail. God wants to show you what a beautiful and extravagant story He’s weaving together for you, but He also wants you to wait on Him. Waiting sharpens character and strengthens perseverance. It takes away any sense of entitlement and teaches humility. If you’re in a time of waiting, seek the Lord’s face. Call to Him when you’re discouraged, rest in His promises, and revel in the comfort of His goodness. Find rest in the waiting—the Lord is working in your life. Wait for Him. This waiting feels so long, Jesus, but I am excited to see the story You’re writing for me.”

“You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” —John 14:14 Rest is a struggle. It’s not that you don’t want to rest, but it can sometimes be so difficult to find space and time to rest well. Sometimes even finding five minutes of alone time is a rare treat, especially if you’re a busy student, parent, caregiver, or career-minded individual. Today, think about what keeps you from rest. Is it the baby who wakes up every three hours? Is it your job, which demands late nights and weekends? Or is it simply an overfilled schedule? Ask the Lord to open up opportunities for rest. Perhaps He’ll remind you to call a friend to babysit for an hour or to set aside one night a week to not answer work calls. Maybe there’s a weekly or monthly obligation that you can say no to for a while. Continue to seek the Lord and to seek rest—He will open a door for you. I am in desperate need of rest, Lord. Please open a door of rest for me soon.”

“Jesus speaks three words in Matthew 11 that can revolutionize your life: “Come to me.” He specifically calls the weary and burdened—those who are overwhelmed with life, those who are so busy they can’t see straight, and those who are simply tired. What does He call them to? Rest. Jesus clearly says, “I will give you rest.” Notice the Lord doesn’t say, “Come to Me when you have a plan for how to rest” or “Come to Me, and I might help you.” He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” The Lord doesn’t want to see you barely holding on. He doesn’t care who you are, or what kind of job you have, or what kind of car you drive. He simply wants to make sure you experience soul-renewing rest. Will you come to Him and accept that rest today?”
