“I’ll wash my hands,” said Claud. “Is this what you guys call club business?” asked Kristy. She was sitting in the director’s chair, looking a little peeved. It had been a few minutes since she’d brought the meeting to order, but so far we hadn’t talked about anything serious. We’d been too busy talking about Bruce Stringbean. “Well?” asked Kristy, when none of us answered. After a moment, Stacey spoke up. “Well, it is Monday,” she said. “And you all know what that means.” We groaned. Time to pay dues. Stacey pulled out the manila envelope that she keeps our treasury in and passed it to Jessi. “Pay up!” she said, a big smile on her face. Stacey just loves to collect our money. And, needless to say, we hate to give it up. She watched closely as each of us put our dues into the envelope. Then, when it came back to her, she counted the money (she can do that in about three seconds — Stacey’s such a math whiz) and heaved a big, satisfied sigh. “Looking good!” she said. The phone rang just then, and Stacey, Claud, and Kristy all dove for it. Stacey grabbed it first. “Hello? Baby-sitters Club,” she said. She paused.”

“David Michael walked up to the desk and rang the bell. “Yes?” asked Karen. “May I help you?” “I’m Bruce Stringbean,” said David Michael, giggling. “I’m a big rock and roll star and I need a room for me and my manager and all my friends.”
