“First came the birds, flowers and trees.
You know the drill.
Now I dedicate this to you, my dear.”

“Stupidity that's stubborn to the core deserves a
toddler-size scolding at best. Wising it up has to start somewhere.”

“It's the jingle in the bells, the carols in the air,
The nipping spirits counting down the days.
Mostly it's the far away star warming hearts, zipping through time the art of anticipation.
It's no wonder Christmas comes around in a wink.”

“Wait a minute—”
“Just hold up.” He demanded. “I honestly believe there’s another world or another dimension within our world and wonder about my parents trapped in such a place, somewhere like an island. Well, every time I tried to reach them, I wasn’t on a boat, or a raft of any sort, and I certainly wasn’t swimming. Believe it or not, I was standing on water. Three times…three times, I saw them. The last time something told me to look down, and when I did, I saw the water below me moving like a treadmill. And you know, in a strange way it explained why I could never get to them.”

“I didn’t say anything for a while, studying the structure of his face. And then I traveled through a perfect set of marble eyes that came to still darkness over a sea of lava. Something was there, I was sure of it, only I couldn’t see it, could only feel it, a feeling of him holding something back.”

“Sorry for leaving without saying hi. But something came up as soon as I got there.”
Now that wasn’t going to do, so I pressed on. “Did you think I’d be there?”
He didn’t come fast with a response. Instead, his absorbed smile pried my soul, my insides felt tensed, like a queen tiptoeing around the edge of a chessboard, wholly vulnerable in a game she knew nothing about.”

“Try you? No.” He stared into my eyes. “I wouldn’t think of it. I mean, what would be the point…after such a lovely evening?” He smirked somewhat. “And, um—what would you hope to gain?”
“What happened to that person I met yesterday? I’m inviting him to this lovely occasion.”
“Sorry. He can’t make it. He’s off tonight.”
“Precisely!” I attempted to bolt, but he grabbed my arm.”

“There were times I imagined being at the hot chick table at lunch (mostly cheerleaders), chatting away about the boy of my dreams and other unboring stuff. Then I couldn’t help wondering if the changes in my life had steered me away from being like them. Mostly I just wanted to fit in. After all, girls at that table were snobby at times.”

“The house didn’t feel the same; it wasn’t the same. The eeriness of that night permeated the walls and the suffocating warmth trapped in those walls. And I stood there, waiting for my feet to think, to move, knowing that they would decide to do just that. They had come this far.”

“Working 9 to 5 is structure. But tying lines together all hours of day is structure at its best performing magic.”
