“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’” Mark 4:39-40 I know with everything that is happening in our world today it would be easy to live in a state of fear. In fact, Ann Landers once said that of the 10,000 letters she received each month there was one problem that dominated all the others: People are afraid. They are afraid of losing their health, their wealth, and their loved ones. All around us people are living in fear, and worry is the by-product of fear. Many of us are worrying ourselves sick over something that may or may not happen tomorrow. What if this happens? What if that happens? What am I going to do? All of our time and energy is consumed by worrying about a problem, instead of working toward a resolution of the problem. Charles Mayo, the founder of the Mayo Clinic, once said, “You can worry yourself to death, but you cannot worry yourself to longer life.” The”

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15 “They had to turn off the life support.” and “The baby has arrived!” These are two messages I received within minutes of each other recently. They represent two different families dealing with diametrically opposing emotions. It reminds me of the time a few years ago that I went from conducting a wedding ceremony, to visiting a man that had just been released from the hospital—only to discover that he had just passed away mere minutes before my arrival. We never know what each new day is going to bring, but it is comforting to know that we serve a God who is able to bring meaning into every area of life. We rejoice with this new life and celebrate the miracle of birth. It reminds us of the new life that is available to us through Christ. However, at the same time, we mourn with this family that has lost a loved one to death. This reminds us of God’s comfort and the fact that we will all walk this road someday. “Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn,” is not only good advice, it’s also a reminder that we all share the tragedies as well as the triumphs of life.”

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1”

“In each case, Jesus reaches out to the downtrodden or in the case of the parable, He highlights the righteousness of the tax collector verses the hypocrisy of the Pharisee. This is significant because tax collectors in Jesus’ day were the lowest of the low in their society.”

“Eugene Peterson, American author and theologian, renders this verse in The Message. It reads, “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.” This”

“St. Francis of Assisi once asked a young monk to join him on a trip to a local village to preach. On the way back the young monk inquired, “I thought we were going to preach.” St. Francis replied, “My son, we did preach. We were preaching while we were walking. We were watched and our behavior was closely observed. It is no use to walk anywhere to preach unless we preach everywhere as we walk.”

“The thrust of the novel is that Don Quixote has filled his head with the exploits of knights, chivalry, and bravery. He becomes so enamored with this whole idea that he sets off to live the life of a knight, despite the fact that this life no longer exists. It would be like someone, today, becoming so enamored with a video game that they begin to see the world as the make-believe world of that game. The”

“We’ve got to seize opportunities to serve. Talk is cheap, and we have cheapened the gospel long enough. At the end of the day, God isn’t going to say, ‘Well said, good and faithful servant.’ There is only one commendation when everything is said and done: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ God doesn’t reward what we know. He doesn’t reward what we say. He rewards the expenditure of energy.”

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.” Hebrews 12:1-3”
