“Again, the stories vary,” Jujor said. “Some say he and a council of thirty-one alchemists managed to concoct a liquid that would break the stone apart into a hundred pieces once dipped in it. Others say a powerful elf, eigni, human, and vampire each sacrificed his or her life, enacting an ancient spell powerful enough to break the Elpis into four pieces. And one interesting tale describes the king summoning the ghost of a giant narwhal, which stabbed the stone into two halves with its tusk.” Terico didn’t know what to think of any of these stories. He had heard many tales reminiscent of these ones as a child, and growing up he felt they were mainly just meant to entertain or help explain things about the world. But who knew? Perhaps some of these things did happen. The Nexi opened up the possibility for many astounding things, especially when rare, powerful stones were used.”

“Once we give you the fragment, our wish for you is to use the power of the Elpis for the sake of killing Delkol Shire. Doing so could prevent a full-scale attack on the capital, which we have reason to believe may ensue within the week.” “I... have no problem with that,” Terico said. It was a little troubling to think his goal to kill Delkol was precisely what the government wished him to do. In some ways, it felt like his whole life was being orchestrated by outsiders.”

“So you know we have an Elpis piece,” Terico said. “Delkol also has one. And now he has a golden Nexi that will lead him to the other two.” “Time is of the essence then,” Rilv said. “We will need you to come to Setar as soon as possible.” “Our boat has been destroyed, unfortunately,” Terico said. “All the ships docked here were destroyed.” “A ship would take too long,” Rilv said. “We will send an airship to pick you up, along with any of your companions who wish to assist.” An airship! This was precisely the sort of thing Terico wished to hear.”

“You are still in Vursa.” The woman’s tone made it more like a statement than a question. “We are,” Terico said. “But I still don’t know who you are, or even what you are... I’m Terico Obisious, and I’ve been traveling with Jujor in order to find the pieces of the Elpis stone, in the hopes of bringing down Delkol and the Brotherhood.” Terico decided it didn’t matter at this point if Borely and Kitoh knew the truth about his objectives, considering how they had witnessed the power of the Elpis firsthand.”

“He screamed and nearly dropped the Elpis on instinct, but he forced himself to keep a firm grip on it. There was no way he was going to let Delkol steal it from him. “I can make the same deal I tried to make with your father,” Delkol said, continuing to walk casually toward Terico. “Give me the Elpis, and there will be no need for me to kill you or your friends over there.” Terico glanced back at Areo, Borely, and Kitoh, who had gathered a few meters behind him. They were in no condition to keep fighting, and really—neither was Terico. But he couldn’t just run away. He couldn’t just do nothing. Not again.”

“The door behind Terico opened. He turned to find a tall, hooded figure in black armor stepping into the wrecked council room. The man wasn’t eigni—he was human. “They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery,” called a familiar voice. “Though I have to say, it is amusing to see you killing others with the same skills I used to kill your parents, and everyone else in that shoddy cathedral.” Delkol. Terico widened his eyes and leaped to his feet. He raised his sword and gripped his Elpis fragment tight. The man who murdered his parents, destroyed his village, and brought an end to everything good in Terico’s life. Delkol Shire stood just a few meters in front of him. The man flipped back his hood, revealing a thin, all-knowing smile. Staring at this man replayed the entire tragedy of Edellerston in Terico’s head. It all came down to this.”

“Areo shook her head, but couldn’t help but smile a little as well. The advice was both overly simplistic and a bit meaningless, making the whole monologue fairly ridiculous. But it was a nice sentiment, nonetheless. “Thanks, Captain Borely.” “Not a problem, madame. But you can call me Borely, if you wish. Though if you must use an adjective, there’s always Handsome Borely. Or Ravishing Borely. Or from you, I wouldn’t mind hearing Sweet Borely or Dearest Borely.” Areo frowned. Certainly can’t call him Subtle Borely any time soon, she thought. “I’ll think about it.”

“Terico wasn’t sure how to respond. He was now relying on a cryptic, blood-sucking vampire and a dodgy old man who continually grew a little more questionable to trust. He wondered just how far down this path he would have to walk in order to obtain his revenge.”

“You have some skill with Nexi stones,” the man went on, calm and placid. He almost sounded disinterested, even. Before Turan could yell a retort, the man caused vines to wrap around Turan’s head, forcing a gag to form across his mouth.”

“I’ll be sure to let Suran know you got beaten up by a plant,” Turan said. “Or when she asks about those cuts at school, you can tell her yourself! She’ll be all over you then.” “Yes, and then I can let all the girls at school know about your little collision with the fluff ball bunnies last week.” “They attacked me in my sleep!”

“His father glanced to the side and smirked. “You take after me a little too well sometimes... Very well then. Your mother will kill me though if you lose an arm or something.” “Or scar that pretty face of yours,” Turan added.”

“You’ll need help with this, Dad,” Terico said. “I’ve fought off cavern monsters before.” Father planted his glowing staff in a tight crevice in the floor. “None this big. Not even half this big, unless Turan’s... embellished stories of the fifteen-meter flying shark bush is to be believed.” “It was twenty meters,” Turan said, still on his knees.”

“The road toward vengeance is a bloody one, and often connects to many other bloody roads, Jujor had said. That’s fine, Terico thought. I will accept the consequences. Turn the road into a sea, and I will dive in if I have to.”

“The road toward vengeance is a bloody one, and often connects to many other bloody roads. Kill one man, and five people will wish to avenge him.”

“Hang on,” Areo called back to Borely. “And quit screaming.” Borely laughed. “I had always hoped to die in a glorious way. Can’t think of anything more spectacular than this!” “Don’t die, you idiot,”

“It doesn’t feel like enough. Hard work doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t bring results.” Mother shook her head and gave a light little sigh. “Men tend to think that way. I think you’ll learn for yourself that’s not true though, Sea Scrub.” She didn’t say any more on the matter, so Terico didn’t either.”

“A quick lesson then, Terico. If your goal is to kill something, you have to take extra measures to ensure it’s truly dead.”

“Terico’s father had always told him that creatures capable of saving lives were generally just as capable of taking them. Humans were the prime example of this, but at this moment, three levels down an underground cave, Terico felt that the carnivorous pitcher plant worked just as nicely.”

“Terico had to lean down a bit to hear him better. “I don’t want to turn into a dragon again...” “I see. It must be...” Terico struggled to find the right word. “Bloody amazing.” Lanek spun his chair around so he was facing them. “If I could turn into a dragon, I’d probably fly around and burn things every day.”
