“Pioneer times would be nice,” I reply. “I like the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. They’re ever so lovely, don’t you think?” Oh my God. Why am I talking like that? Ever so lovely?!
Bruce nods. “What about studying the Great Depression? That could be fun to learn about.”

“I’m bird watching.” The lie slips off my tongue almost effortlessly. The tightness in my chest keeps me from wanting to share my true feelings. I’m a little on edge.
