“slowly chugging away from the coast.”

“He walked to the entrance of the cave and knelt down, peering into the opening of the cave as he did so. It was dark. The man had obviously walked down the tunnel. Will decided to wait outside the cave until the man returned. If the tunnel was no longer accessible, he and the others would have to think of a new plan. Walking away from the entrance, he climbed higher up the mountain and sat down next to a bush. ~ Emerging from the trees, Joe caught sight of the stone hut. He grabbed Sarah’s arm as she walked towards the building. “Wait!” “Why?” Sarah questioned. “What if one of the men is in there instead of Will and Amy?” Joe asked. “I hadn’t thought of that,” Sarah admitted. “Why don’t we keep to the trees and circle the hut?” Joe suggested. “We should be able to peek through the doorway once we’re around the other side.” The two of them surveyed the building. There was no one to be seen and no sound was heard from within the stone hut as they walked around it. Joe frowned. “I’m beginning to think no one’s in there.” He looked at his watch. “We’re twenty minutes late, though, so I would have thought the others would have been here by now.” Sarah reached down and picked up a medium sized rock. “We could throw this inside the hut and see what happens.” Joe grinned. “Good thinking. If Amy or Will are in there, they should guess it’s us and come out.” “And if it’s the men?” Sarah asked. “They should come out as well,” Joe replied, taking the rock from Sarah. “If we see no one, I think it will be pretty safe to say that the hut’s empty. Now, just in case the men are in there, go and hide behind that bush. I’ll join you in a moment.”

“Yes, that’s right,” a cheery voice called out. The children spun around and saw a boy of about Joe’s age”

“I won’t be gone long.” Will took the rucksack and hurried away. ~ As Will came into sight of the lighthouse, he breathed a sigh of relief. There was no sign of the men and he hoped it would remain like this. Heading towards the rocks, he saw that the waves were splashing over them. Not every time, but more than half the time. He knew that high tide was only a few hours away, so this was what he had expected. This was another reason why he had wanted to go instead of Joe. He felt he was a better swimmer and, in case he was swept off the rocks, he had a better chance of reaching the shore.”

“The others climbed up without any difficulty. Joe didn’t think that the ladder would be too heavy to haul up and he was right. Before long, they had the ladder leaning against the other side of the stone wall. Everyone climbed down and, after stowing the ladder behind some bushes, walked towards the manor, trying to keep behind the trees and bushes as much as possible.”

“By the time the four children arrived back at the campsite, the girls knew the story behind the boy’s weird actions as they had told them everything. If the ghost was a person, which the boys were certain it was, it meant that someone was trying to scare them so they would leave the island.”
