End Times Fascism Quotes Showing 1-2 of 2
“Indeed, in a strange twist on the Old Testament tale, the oligarch class, having arrogated godlike powers to themselves, aren’t content to just build the arks. They appear to be doing their best to cause the flood.”
― Naomi Klein, End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World
“Put in the starkest terms, the terror that wiped out liberation theology left a vacuum, one that more entrepreneurial and nihilistic theologies rushed to fill. The dynamics were particularly brutal in Guatemala, site of the first Latin American CIA-backed coup in 1954. Over the course of a grinding civil war that lasted decades, 166,000 Indigenous Maya were killed and liberation theology was practically snuffed out, with its churches targeted and hundreds of church workers murdered. Many of the most genocidal crimes were committed in the early ’80s, under the brief presidency of José Efraín Ríos Montt, an evangelical military officer who waged a holy war against the left. As the historian Greg Grandin recounts in Empire’s Workshop, Montt received strong backing from the US religious right, with Pat Robertson using his Christian Broadcasting Network to raise funds for the Guatemalan strongman, who would later stand trial for genocide. During this period, US evangelicals helped silence and discredit any church that was critical of Ronald Reagan’s Central American policy. Today, Guatemala is one of the most evangelical countries in the world, and also one of the most pro-Israel. In 2018 it was the only country that followed the United States in moving its embassy to Jerusalem, though a handful of others have done so since. In Guatemala, Israel is less a place than an idea—the idea that tomorrow could be less punishing than today.”
