“Mom? What's that noise. Are you in a room full of ghosts? "No it's my Clairvoyant Certification Course. We're learning to connect with our true selves.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“I’m Olivia,” I say, trying to keep my hand from melting in his as he grips it. I’m touching a member of the Brightside!”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“Honey, were you trying to be a 1950s beatnik from Funny Face or something?” He guesses, correctly. “It is one thing to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn, but it is quite another to wear a mock turtleneck and capris to a Hollywood event. This is the big time, sweetheart; you best check your costume at the door.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“Every single person in that audience was on your side the minute you started talking. They were rooting for you—they loved you. I promise they did.”

His focus is intent on my eyes as his hand moves to the back of my neck and he leans closer. “It would be impossible not to…”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“It won’t happen anytime soon, don’t worry,” Berkeley says, amused. “We still have two albums left on our contract, and like I said before, the band’s a big business—it supports a lot of people—we’re not going anywhere.”

“Well, that’s a relief. You scared me. I was about to ask if you wouldn’t mind autographing my bra so I’d have something to remember you by.”

He takes his time responding, his eyes slowly looking me up and down. “But you’re not wearing a bra,” he finally points out.”

“The only reason someone would be calling this early the morning after the Grammys is to tell me I did something wrong.”

The phone goes silent.

“Well, I’m going to have to disagree with that,” I tell him. “In my estimation, you definitely did everything right last night.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“It’s just that I like you, Liv, and I don’t want anyone to hurt you. Being seen with me comes with a lot of baggage—you need time to see if it’s worth it.”

“Berkeley, I don’t think anyone could hurt me as long as I’m with you,” I reply, looking him directly in the eye, trying to convince him he doesn’t need to worry—that I already think it’s worth it, but even I am surprised at the conviction in my voice.

“Thank you,” he says, his eyes lighting up as he smiles, sending warm shivers through my body. “But I’ll still do my best to give you time. I made a mistake tonight, kissing you in front of the cameras, but I promise I won’t let it happen again—until you’re ready.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“He laughs and gives me a playful shove. “She’s not just beautiful; she’s a comedienne to boot.”

“It’s my defense mechanism,” I admit. “I find the easiest way out of an uncomfortable situation is through laughter.”

“Well, I like it. Thank you.” He smiles as his arm circles my waist. “Does this make you uncomfortable?” he asks with a glint in his eye as he pulls me closer to him.

I feel my body warm in response, and I can’t help but inch closer still. Unable to resist, I am being drawn in to him. “You know it does,” I say softly into his eyes as my breath catches in my throat.”

“I remember when I bought Dear Rose,. I was sixteen and ran upstairs and closed the door and listened to it on repeat for hours. It was the first album I listened to in my car when I got my license—I loved it—and everything ever since. Your music is sort of my soundtrack.”

He puts down his knife and fork as our eyes lock. “Thank you.”

The words hang in the air and the tension mounts. Awe that I’m sitting here with him washes over me in waves as I realize I’ve admitted too much. Afraid I sound like a stalker superfan, I close my eyes, breaking the connection.

When I reopen them, he’s still staring at me.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“As long as one person is connecting to the song—as long as it means something to someone—it’s all worth it to me. There’s no greater feeling than being able to creatively share your truth with someone else—for them to be touched by it enough to make it their own is the ultimate reward.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“Liv, that was for you. I didn’t know we were going to play it until I left the table.”

“You wrote it on the spot?” For me?”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“In fact, from where I was sitting, it seemed he was way more interested in looking at you.”

“It’s hard to look away from a train wreck,” I reply.

“You’re impossible.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“He knew Berkeley would be here. This is your last Oscars, Mifflin. My daggers take aim.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
“The boobs are real. Good. Don’t get fake ones.” Parker stands back, examining me. “If, at some point in the future, like after you’ve had kids, they begin to sag, it’s okay to get a lift. But, don’t touch them until absolutely necessary.”
Katie Delahanty, In Bloom
