“Paul lifted his hand and brushed his thumb across Leigh’s lips. Then he leaned forward and kissed him. Leigh groaned with release, as though something deep within him had been unlocked. The kiss became urgent, a tangle of lips and tongues, and Paul closed his eyes, aware of the darkness like a wave and of the two of them swimming in it, spinning around and around endlessly, as though the world itself was turning. Paul grasped helplessly, found the neck of Leigh’s suit and tore it, ripping it the length of his spine. Leigh laughed and pulled away and Paul opened his eyes to find Leigh naked, tearing the suit from his shoulders and thighs, a rag soon crumpled on the floor.”

“Leigh nodded, his face buried in Paul’s chest, and Paul wondered what it was that made Leigh cling to him as he did, as though Paul was his solace, his guardian and his shield, a person who might do what Paul yearned to do — comfort and protect him.”

“You in there? It was like the guy was asking if he was okay, if he was safe. As though he thought the room was a refuge. And then Leigh realized how crazy this was. And how crazy someone might be who thought that way. Who thought they could lock you in a room and it’d keep you safe.”
