Eager to get across the border, Prester had arranged to meet his guide in the local tavern. He didn’t bother asking the other two men if they were too tired. He was sure both had been through much worse than the six-hour car ride they’d just completed. After parking on the almost empty main street, the three men got out of Prester’s Mercedes. The Allied advance was only 100 miles away, but, barred by the Rhine River, they were stuck in France. Prester was sure the Wehrmacht would swoop in to destroy them in the coming weeks. It was only a matter of time. Gottmadingen showed no sign of the advancing American armies. Nazi flags fluttered in the breeze and people walked the streets with swastika badges on their chests. They, like him, had faith in the Führer to deliver them from the vile Allied threat. The tavern, an old-fashioned building painted white with a thatched roof, was dark inside. The guide, a well-known tracker who, according to Freund, knew the mountains better than anyone, was sitting by the fire. A tall, middle-aged man with a thick beard stood up as they approached. Prester shook his hand. “I’m Waldemar,” the guide said. Prester introduced himself and the other two men. “Four?” Waldemar asked. “Seems like a lot. I thought it was three?” “It’s four, and we want to move”
