The implication is that ancient people were superstitious and had no problem believing in the supernatural. We assume that if an angel showed up, people of that time simply said, “Oh, it’s an angel. Hello. What’s the message, please?” It’s an arrogant and paternalistic view of our ancestors, not to mention a willful misreading of the text.
