“U.S. paper money is printed in sheets of 32 notes. Sometimes, the sheets are misfed into the high-speed presses, resulting in misplaced or upside-down serial numbers. In 1976, a shopper in a Dallas supermarket checkout line was handed a note mistakenly printed with $20 on one side, $10 on the other. At least three currency sheets with the error were printed in 1974, so there may be as many as 96 double-denomination notes in existence. About 20 have been found. Depending on its condition, one of these bills could be worth much more than either face value.”

“According to research from Laval University in Quebec, time passes most quickly when we’re absorbed in an activity; time passes most slowly when we’re thinking specifically about how long something is taking—perhaps most often when we’re waiting. That’s why “the watched pot never boils,” even though the watched pot actually takes 9 1/2 minutes to boil,”

“How mad is a wet hen? In researching this, we contacted one of the nation’s leading egg producers and explained the reason for calling. We said that we wanted to know how mad a wet hen becomes. The representative there said that he would call us back. After 30 minutes, the phone rang and it was the Hubbard Farms employee. He triumphantly announced that hens do not like to get wet. “They sort of flick their feathers,” he said.”

“May 11, 12, and 13 are the feast days of Saints Mamertus, Pancras, and Gervais (or Gervatius). These three are known as the Three Chilly Saints not because they were cold during their lifetimes, but because these days are traditionally the coldest of the month.”

“STOP STOPPING A growing body of research shows that often what looks like “multitasking” is actually “rapid task-switching,” especially when technology is involved. One study of computer programmers showed that as they attempted to work, they interrupted themselves or were interrupted about every 3 minutes, usually to check email. Other studies have shown that it’s now common for office workers to interrupt what they’re doing to check email 30 to 40 times an hour and that the more a worker self-interrupts, the more stress he or she experiences. Studies of college students show that while trying to study, they lose focus every 3 minutes on average, for example, to check Facebook or text a friend. The more often they interrupt themselves to “multitask,” the worse they do on tests. Multitasking with technology is no way to make the most of your time—those emails can wait!”
