“The sun which warms the plant can under other conditions also wither it. The rain which nourishes the flower can under other conditions rot it. The same sun shines upon mud that shines upon wax. It hardens the mud but softens the wax. The difference is not in the sun, but in that upon which it shines. The Divine Life which shines upon a soul that loves Him, softens it into everlasting life; that same Divine Life which shines upon the slothful soul, neglectful of God, hardens it into everlasting death.”

“It would seem that sinful envy of the salvation of a thief is a greater sin than thievery. One thief was saved: therefore let no one despair. One thief was lost: therefore let no one presume. Have pity then on the miserable and Divine Mercy will be the reward for your pity.”

“The word from the Cross teaches us two lessons: (1) The reason for forgiving is ignorance; and (2) There are no limits to forgiveness. The reason for forgiveness is ignorance. Divine Innocence found such a reason for pardon; certainly guilt can do no less. St. Peter’s first Pentecostal sermons used this very excuse of ignorance for the Crucifixion so fresh in his mind: "You killed the author of life, whom God then raised from the dead... And now, brothers, I know that you acted out of ignorance, as did your rulers.” If there were full consciousness of the evil, perfect deliberation, perfect understanding of the consequences of acts, there would be no room for forgiveness. That is why there is no redemption for the fallen angels. They knew what they were doing. We do not. We are very ignorant – ignorant of ourselves and ignorant of others.”
