“Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been studied in the treatment of liver disease. The active component, silymarin, is found in the entire plant but is concentrated in the fruit and seeds. Silymarin is a potent antioxidant and acts as a toxin blockade by inhibiting toxins from binding to membrane receptors on the surface of liver cells (called hepatocytes). Silymarin can protect the liver from being injured by, for example, different toxins, radiation, and iron overload. It has been successfully used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis, and toxin-induced liver diseases. (There are also some studies showing no effect of silymarin and many studies showing that vitamin C is just as good.) While seeds are generally avoided on the Paleo Approach, milk thistle seed extract may be a beneficial supplement (unless the very small amount of alcohol in the supplement is not tolerated; see here). Milk thistle tea is also a good option.”

“Furthermore, eating a diet rich in fats—especially quality animal fats, fats from fish, and fats from coconut, avocado, and olives—will not only not make you fat, but will help you achieve a healthier weight.”

“Gluten is extremely good at breaching the intestinal barrier, causing a leaky gut in the process, and then directly activating the immune system. If you have an autoimmune disease and eat gluten, I urge you to ban gluten from your diet for the rest of your life. Your body will thank you.”

“Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). H. pylori is frequently accused of contributing to the development and progression of autoimmune disease (and is also one of the best-understood persistent infections). As mentioned in the previous section, H. pylori is a bacterium found in the upper gastrointestinal tract of approximately 50 percent of the population and is known to cause stomach ulcers in susceptible individuals. It also modulates the adaptive immune system through a very complex interaction. In fact, the interaction is so complex that acquiring H. pylori early in life prevents immune and autoimmune diseases. By contrast, acquiring H. pylori as an adult (which is more common in Western countries) increases the risk of immune dysfunction.”

“Borrelia. Borrelia are spirochete bacteria typically transmitted by lice and ticks. (Lyme disease is caused by borrelia.) Rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, schizophrenia (suspected to be an autoimmune disease), and dementia (also suspected to be an autoimmune disease) are all associated with Borrelia infections.”

“Balance between Th1 and Th2 (and indeed among Th9, Th17, and Th22) can also be achieved by focusing on bodywide reduction of inflammation, removal of immune system triggers, and supporting healthy Th3, Tr1, and regulatory T cell production and activity. Basically, balance can be achieved naturally by following the Paleo Approach—no immune-stimulating botanicals required!”

“It is believed that one of the contributing factors in autoimmune disease is an imbalance in the subtypes of helper T cells. Specifically, certain autoimmune diseases tend to be associated with overactivation of Th1 cells or Th2 cells, which is known as Th1 or Th2 dominance, respectively. There are no hard and fast rules, though. For example, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is most often, but not always, associated with Th1 dominance; Th2-dominant Hashimoto’s thyroiditis exists as well.”

“Both genetics and environment determine just how aggressive the immune system will be in its attacks. This is where controlling environmental triggers becomes crucial. Even if your body has already learned to make autoantibodies, removing the environmental triggers will remove the stimulus for the immune system to go into overdrive.”

“All autoimmune diseases are caused by a betrayal of the immune system. The immune system, which is supposed to protect us from invading microorganisms, instead targets normal proteins within our own bodies, treating these fundamental components of our cells with the exact same lethal force as it would a virus, bacteria, or parasite.”

“While further research is required, some doctors and researchers are even beginning to believe that gluten sensitivity may be a factor in every autoimmune disease. Furthermore, increased intestinal permeability (also known as leaky gut, which we’ll talk about in more detail shortly) is present in every single autoimmune disease in which it has been tested: gluten increases intestinal permeability.”

“Algae, such as chlorella and spirulina (typically found in supplements but also in prepackaged green juices), are excluded on the Paleo Approach because of their ability to stimulate the immune system.”

“Cyanogenic Glycosides. Hydrogen cyanide, which is highly toxic, is released from cyanogenic glycosides when plants that contain them are chewed and digested (through an enzyme that is also present in the plant). Cassava (also called manioc, yucca, and tapioca and a major ingredient in fufu flour), sorghum, lima beans, almonds, bamboo, corn, yams (but not sweet potatoes), chickpeas, cashews, stone fruits (like peaches and apricots), and fruits from the apple family are all food sources of cyanogenic glycosides. In most cases, the amount of these compounds can be greatly reduced using traditional preparation methods, which involves soaking (often grinding and then soaking) or fermenting followed by thorough cooking. Excess cyanide residue from improper preparation is known to cause acute cyanide intoxication and goiters (because cyanide binds to iodine and depletes iodine from the body—hence its status as an antinutrient) and has been linked to ataxia (a neurological disorder affecting the ability to walk). It has also been linked to tropical calcific pancreatitis, leading to chronic pancreatitis. You can minimize your exposure to cyanogenic glycosides by not eating the pits or seeds of stone fruits and fruits from the apple family, by eating only canned bamboo if you’re eating bamboo, and by avoiding fresh cassava (unless you know how to prepare it traditionally, which involves soaking it for at least twenty-four hours before thoroughly cooking it).”

“There are two main classes of antidiarrheal drugs: antispasmodic drugs (loperamide and bismuth subsalicylate are the most common) and thickeners (typically fiber supplements, such as psyllium). While it’s important to eat lots of vegetables and fruit, in large part because of their fiber, concentrated fiber supplements can feed gut dysbiosis (not to mention that vegetables and fruits are also full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants). However, the occasional use of fiber supplements is not associated with adverse effects (except perhaps when taking too much, which can cause constipation).”

“However, it’s important to understand that dietary insufficiency of omega-3s refers to an imbalance in the ratio between omega-3s and omega-6s. An ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is somewhere between 1:1 and 4:1. However, typical Western diets fall into a range between 10:1 and 25:1! This is largely thanks to processed seed oils, grains, and the higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids that are present in the meat and dairy from grain-fed animals.”
