“What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to be with you when you awoke."
He lifted one black brow in a look of clear disbelief. "I find that difficult to believe, madam, considering your eagerness to flee my presence earlier."
Rhianna lifted her chin, determined to make him understand. "It wasn't you I was running from."
"Indeed? Need I remind you there was no one else in the room?"
"It was the room I was running from, my lord, not you."
He regarded her a moment, then glanced over his shoulder into the room behind him.
"What was it that frightened you?" he asked, his voice heavily laced with sarcasm. "The bed? The armoire?" His gaze was hard and cold as it met hers again. "The table, perhaps?”

“Montroy stared at her as if she were speaking in a language he couldn't quite understand. "You asked to stay here? With him? But why?"
"I'm afraid I can't explain it."
Montroy raked a hand through his hair, thinking that, if he lived to be a hundred, he would never understand the workings of the female mind. "Well, I wish you'd try!”

“I'm sorry if my presence upsets you."
One corner of his mouth turned down in a wintry smile. "You have no idea what your presence does to me.”

“Her touch has rendered me helpless,
her trust weakens the chains of the past.
Dare I believe in the love she offers?
Have I found an end to this darkness at last?”

“I look into her eyes
and find forgiveness there
and for a moment--
one brief, sweet shining moment,
I see an end to my despair.”

“I don't know what to say."
"Say yes, Mistress McLeod."
Ada shook her head. "I can't allow you to come calling, Mr. Bevins."
“I see.” He shook his head. “No, I don’t see. I thought, that is . . . Why not?”

“And you?" he asked. "Have you, in your few short years of life, found love?"
"Aye, my lord, though I fear he does not return my affection."
"Then he is a fool!"
A faint smile curved Rhianna's lips. "On that, at least, we are agreed."
Rayven fought back his anger. The urge to destroy the cur who failed to return her love rose up within him, and with it an all-consuming jealousy. "Who is this man?"
"Can you not guess?" Rhianna replied, her voice hardly more than a whisper.”

“Several minutes passed before he realized that she had stopped reading, that she was staring back at him.
"Is something wrong, sweet Rhianna?"
"No, my lord."
"Why have you stopped reading?"
A faint smile played over her lips. "I stopped some time ago."
He frowned. "Will you tell me why?"
"Because the story is over, my lord."
He looked at her for a long moment, feeling quite the fool, and then he laughed.”

“I shadow my gaze in your presence
and pray you may ne'er be part,
Of the hunger that class at my vitals
of the evil that blackens my heart.”

“I long for what I do lost
For that which can never be.
I cloak the horror of what I am
and pray you never see.”

and lust for the light
For I am Vampyre
forever imprisoned by the night.”
