“Jake made his way with a gun. He righted wrongs with it, and he lived and stayed alive by it. One day, the gun might be looked at as a bad thing. It might be looked at as a tool only barbaric, uneducated, and uncivilized people used in times of old. In my way of thinking, they would be wrong. There will always be bad people to deal with, and some will only be dealt with one way, with a gun.”

“They don't understand the hardness of this country. Let one of their daughters be raped or murdered, and they won't think me so cruel. They will cheer and sneer at the heathen I would be leading in on a rope. His bleeding bare feet and bloody wrist would be fine with them then. Until then, they want April showers and sweet-smelling roses to be the order of the day.”

“It's one thing to forgive a man for his deeds against you, but it's quite another to let him go free when committing vile acts against humanity. That's why we have laws. Without them, our enemies would run wild, and there would soon be little order in the land. Does not the Bible also say, Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood will be shed by man? He looked at his friends and shook his head in disagreement. No, you start playing nice with criminals, and one day you will pay for it. One day it will come back to haunt you.”

“Sheriff Jake Bonnel is a no-nonsense man. I agree that his ways are rather harsh, but I don't see that changing. He does not cotton to this new way...lawyers and laws protecting criminals. Before things began to change out here, we hung criminals in short order. Now we find this way and that to keep them alive. We made rights for outlaws when they should have lost all rights except due process of a fair trial. I'm a judge, and I wonder to myself now and then, what have we done? I fear we will one day have passed so many laws that it will be a crime to try the vilest of criminals.”

“It's not about money. It's about good people and bad people. I help the good people when they have trouble with the bad people.”
