“He stepped into me, and there was nowhere for me to go once my ass hit the truck. Taking his ball cap off, he spun it around to put it back on backward, and my breath lodged in my throat. I’d already been through a lot. I could not handle Remington Town with his sleeves rolled up and a backward baseball cap. It was too much. Too damn much. Then he braced his arm beside my head, taking his torture farther, and brought his face a couple inches from mine. His glare could have melted glaciers. Never one to back down, I tipped my chin up. “I like your starbursts better than this frown.” I pressed my lips against his downturned mouth, and he stilled, neither responding nor pulling away. “Kiss me back, Remington.” He took my chin in his hand, keeping me still. “As sweet as your lips are, I’m not going to be distracted. What someone did to your truck is a whole hell of a lot more than nonsense. It’s malicious and violent. I can’t stand the idea of anyone coming near you or your property with the intent to destroy, and I won’t be idle while that happens. I’m taking you to the station to report this. If the cops won’t deal with it—” I kissed him again, hard and fast, and all I got was another glare. “I never said I wasn’t going to report it.” His exhale was heavy and warm as his forehead fell to roll over mine. “That’s right. You didn’t.” “Remington,” I whispered. “Let’s go. It’s hot, I’m tired, and I want to get this over with.”

“Hey, Remi. It’s Hannah.” “Hannah,” he breathed, and my toes curled. He had a way with his mouth, and my name uttered from it sounded better than ever. “Good to hear from you. Been a while.” He wasn’t pleased with me, and he had every right to be pissed. Since he’d walked me home from Joy’s Elbow Room, I’d gone back to avoiding him. I hadn’t wanted to, but being near him, I would’ve had to fight myself from jumping into his arms—and that was exactly why I’d kept my distance. The fact remained, getting close to Remi wasn’t going to end well for me. He wasn’t here for long, and I knew myself well enough to predict how this would go. I’d get attached like always, and he’d break my heart in one way or another. “I hate to call you like this, but I need help. Are you busy?” I asked. “Not with anything I can’t put off ’til later. What do you need?” I rolled my eyes skyward. This man, contrary to what I’d originally thought of him, was a good one.”

“She turned her head, squinting at me. “Are you flirting with me right now?” I curled my pinkie around hers. “I don’t know what I’m doing.” She wiggled the finger I had hooked but kept it where it was. “Feels like you do.” “Guess I’m good at faking it. I haven’t had a clue what I’m doing or where I’m going in a long while.” “Hmmm. It feels like wherever you’re going, you’re gonna take me with you.” Soft, lilting words placed into the starry night by her sweet mouth had me reacting viscerally. “Christ, Hannah.” I took her hand in mine and dragged her under the awning of the building we were passing, cloaking us in shadows. “All I know is I can’t stop thinking about the taste of you. It’s wrong, I know it. I need to walk you home and let it be. That would be smart.” Her face was mostly hidden in the dark, but I made out her long, slow blinks. “You told me no, Remi. You pushed me away.” “You were upset, sweetheart. I would’ve been taking advantage of you in that state if I had let it continue. I may not be perfect, but I’m not that kind of man.”

“She leaned over the table, lining up her shot. Standing slightly behind her, I allowed myself a meandering look at her long, leanly muscled body. Legs that went on for days and days. An ass that filled out her jeans in all the right ways. A waist that curved in just enough for a pair of hands to fit on either side. Hannah was well made. Sturdy enough to face down stallions and Wyoming winters while painfully feminine in her little movements, her scent, sweet laughter, and all the details that made up the rest of her. The luxurious, thick, shiny hair cascading down her back was a contrast to the simplicity of her style. She’d worn it down tonight, and my fingers twitched to trail through it, to bury themselves in the depths, to know if it felt as soft and silky as it looked. She’d made the first shot and was lining up her second when she spoke. “I feel your eyes on my ass.” “Think I’d be insulting you if I didn’t look. It’s a mighty fine ass.” Her shot went wide. She whirled around, her cheeks flushed. “You did that on purpose.”

“I cocked my head, studying her. She was still boiling, but it had gentled. “I might be as heartless as you thought, sweetheart.” That earned me a groan. “Don’t talk nice to me now, Remington. I’m not ready for that.” I laughed and let go of her wrists to hold my hands up in innocence. “I wouldn’t dream of being nice to you. Last thing I’d do.” She didn’t laugh with me. Instead, her gaze locked on my mouth, and her body tensed. That was the only warning I had before she crashed into me, her lips meeting mine in hot, wet anger. It was the underlying sweetness that had my mouth moving against hers before my brain caught up to what was happening. But even when it did, I kept kissing her because it felt too good to stop. It’d been a long time since I’d had a woman in my arms, and that was where she was. I wrapped her up, pulling her flush with my chest, one hand bracing the base of her skull, the other at the small of her back. She was warm and solid, smelling like sunshine and sweat. And she fit against me like she was made to be there. Tall enough I barely had to bend. Strong enough I could hold her tight without worry she’d break. The moan she unleashed when our tongues touched was both carnal and…pained. It was the pain that brought me up short as the reality of what was happening barreled back to the forefront. Caleb had warned me she was fragile. Told me how rough she’d had it, and I’d promised to be careful. I’d seen her grief, had practically felt it, sharp as a knife, when we’d stood in Graham’s room together. I couldn’t hurt her any more than I already had, yet here I was kissing this woman without any thought to the consequences. But fuck did she taste like the best dream I’d ever had. Wrenching my lips from hers wasn’t easy. It was picturing the tears I’d seen in her eyes that allowed me to pull myself away. Hands on her shoulders, I put some space between our bodies, and it was crazy how unnatural it felt when I hadn’t known what it felt like to hold her until minutes ago. “No, baby. We can’t do this.”

“I made it to the checkout line before taking in the people around me. The cashier, about my age, was familiar in the way most people in a town this size were. We’d probably gone to school together, but I couldn’t be sure. She was taking her time ringing up the man in front of me, and my attention diverted to the other customers in line, stopping on the woman behind me. Her, I recognized. There was no mistaking the tall, icy blonde for anyone other than Mrs. Elena Kelly, my childhood best friend’s mom. I’d spent a lot of my days out on the Kelly ranch with Caleb, getting dirty and making trouble. His parents had been firm but not strict, and they had welcomed me into their home for countless dinners and sleepovers. Elena Kelly’s gaze swept over me, pausing for a moment. I nodded at her, my mouth curving into a half smile. “Good evening, Mrs. Kelly.” She cocked her head, taking me in. There was no flare of recognition, but it’d been more than a decade since she’d seen me. I pushed my sunglasses to the top of my head, giving her a better view.”
