“You’re mine, aeterna – and I’ll defy any god who tries to take you from me.”
“Promise, aeternus?” I mumble.
He laughs and it’s perfection. “Promise. Especially after you made me work so damn hard to have you in the first place.”

“I thought you promised me a long night, Phelan.”
He smirks and he slips his fingers from mine, trailing them down my centre and setting me on fire again.
“I did, didn’t I?” he hums. “And I don’t break my promises, aeterna. Tell me what you want, Calla, and I’ll give it to you. You’re everything and I’ll give you the whole damn fairytale.”

“I don’t remember saying you could move your hands.”
“I don’t remember you complaining when you were holding one of them.”

“Gods, you’re clever enough to be incredibly stupid.” Grey’s eyes snap back to mine. “And you’re not much better, so you can wipe that smirk right off that pretty little face of yours.”

“Forgiveness. Understanding. Acceptance. Trust.” We swallow in unison. “Tell me what I need to do, Calla, and I’ll do it.”

“Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Do you realise it’s treason?” he scoffs. “If Elisium finds out they’ll exile you if you’re lucky. You’ve put the entire fucking court at risk – and for what?”
“My aeterna,” Phelan replies. “I won’t apologise for protecting her.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“Why do you have a lodge, Phelan?”
“For you,” he replies. “I might not have known you were my aeterna, but I knew I’d want us to have somewhere of our own when I found you. Where we could spend time together without being interrupted by the court and where the only thing we needed to think about was each other.”
Damn.
It takes every ounce of reserve not to swoon for the man who’s staring up at me in adoration. He blinks and keeps gazing at me as if I’m some miracle despite all my flaws and weaknesses. He looks at me like he’s in love with me and always will be, no matter what I do, no matter how terrible it is.
I swallow and give him the only reasonable answer I can find, letting a small whimper escape my lips.
“Aeterna,” he whispers.
“Why?”
“Because you’re mine, Calla. Because I’m yours. And because we’re perfect for each other and what we have is a gift from the gods.”

“If you let me, I'll give you the whole damn fairytale, Calla.”

“You think you're going to walk out of here?” he laughs.
“No.” I shake my head and the chains clink as they hit each other. “I'm going to take the whole damn nest out and then I'm going to walk out of here.”

“You poke her with a stick,” the first voice hisses.
“No, you give her a poke,” replies the second.
It appears I’m in the presence of two incredibly stupid vampires, even by the ridiculously low standard the species sets for itself. It’s an effort not to roll my eyes as they bicker about whether they should or shouldn’t poke me and who’s drawn the short stick.”

“You worried about me?” I snip back.
“No,” he replies. “I’m worried about what happens if you’re not here when Phelan gets back and he discovers I let you go on a day trip.”
I grin and offer him a small shrug. “I think it’s called a clusterfuck.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“I might have wobbled a bit.”

“You think I didn’t want the fairytale?” he sighs, staring back at me. “I wanted the whole damn fairytale, Calla. I wanted you to be so dazed by me that you fell over and I’d get to swoop in and catch you. I dreamed I’d get to carry you to my bed and keep you in it, and you’d be completely content in my arms.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“Why do you have to be so goddamn annoying?” he hisses.
“Because I’ve spent a lifetime dealing with men,” I snap back.
He stares at me with a rage that could tear through hell.
“Don’t get clever with me.”
“It’s hard not to be, relatively speaking.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“It’s horrific.
It’s nice. It’s comforting.
It’s enough to make my inside retch.
It feels like home.
And I hate it because it’s him.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“Aeterna,” Phelan says again and looks at me expectantly, asking for reciprocation.
I shake my head and stop retreating. “You can fuck right off if you think I’m giving you that, you arrogant, conceited prick.”

“. In an instant the pieces of a jigsaw I’ve seen too many times click into place. She’s been raised in one of those fae households. Where they still hold the traditional values. Where they say they want change but what they actually want is for things to stay the same because it’s always been done that way and that’s proof it works.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“She’s shuffling things around her head while everything else is held in place and she looks at me like she’s having a revelation. As if she’s just realised that spending her life saying sorry when people walk over her, being good-mannered and generally amenable has made her polite, well-behaved and small.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“I slurp my tea, breaking the heavy silence with another lapse in manners. Tea serves many purposes and as I pour another cup I make my intention to brandish it at full force perfectly clear.”

“Deliberately taking on a weak third at your own expense is risky. Technically, it’s also insane in a way that’s commendable enough to admire, ideally from a safe distance.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“You didn’t fuck me senseless,” I scoff.
“No?” he smirks back. “Your legs stopped working, you trembled and your wings were flapping wildly. I think that’s the best fuck you’ve had in a long time, darling. It’s certainly the best fuck I’ve had in quite a while.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“He keeps glancing down at me, staring at me like I’m a precious possession he’s terrified of losing. I’m sore in the most delicious ways, covered in dirt and scratches and my hair’s a tangled mess.
I’ve never felt so beautiful.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“The world hangs between one state and another, caught between the day and the night. Its twilight holds many secrets, hiding tales of heroes and villains, of gods and monsters. Of love and hate and everything in between. Of all the seasons I have seen and this is mine.
It’s ours.
Tonight, this world is mine, as I am his. And I will reshape every landscape, reset all the stars and rework the heavens to bring him back to me. Because that’s the fairytale – and we deserve it.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“There’s never enough time but this is cruel. It’s vicious and unyielding. There’s nothing except a cold, bitterness. It’s everything I knew until he showed me there was something else, something more. Something better.
This is visceral, soul-destroying pain.”
C.J. Holmes, Twilight's Secrets
“I try to catch his eyes, pleading for one last look.
I deserve it. I’ve earned it. I need it. I’d give anything for it.
Even if his eyes were filled with anger and burned with an inferno hot enough to tear through hell. I’d withstand it for one last glance from him, for one second more.
For a single moment more of the fairytale he’s created.”
