“the late morning sun warm and pleasant on my skin, the weather in complete contradiction to my mood. God mother-nature can be a sarcastic bitch.”

“Fight.
I can’t. Not anymore.
Fight.
Why?
My body isn’t mine anymore, it is a toy, an instrument for other people’s pleasure.”

“How do you do this?” I finally blurted, unable to stop myself.
“Do what?” Jason asked, eyes on the ceiling. I got the feeling he knew what I was asking, but didn’t want to answer.
“Live.” I replied, not really able to find another word for it.
“It’s simple, I don’t.”
I looked over sharply at Jason and he was looking back at me, the autonomous, blank eyes slowly returning.
“I exist. I survive. I endure, but this is not living,” he replied steadily, “the Jason Langman my friends and family knew- that I knew- died a long time ago.”

“I had never felt so helpless, the old Brennan was gone, long gone. Not like the proverbial box that had housed my family, my memories, my life for months, but actually gone– eradicated, burned away to ash and bone, leaving a walking skeleton in his place.”

“But I’m not the same person,” I replied, drawing in a shuddering breath. “My parents think I’m going to go back to normal one day and I’ll never be normal again. Even if I don’t have AIDS or something else, I feel wrong inside.” I dared to look to the side at my friend’s face. Her expression was sad, but she didn’t seem as disturbed as I thought she would be by the revelation.
“I feel like they put something inside of me and it’s just there‒ rotting‒ and I can’t get it out without hurting myself.” Destroying myself.”
