“My word of advice to whoever you are is this. Never miss a chance to see or do something new. Too many people work their entire life waiting for retirement to do the things I have done just to discover they have grown too many roots or they are just too old and tired. When I leave this life I want to slide into home shouting, “WOW. What a ride!”

“Tea in China wasn’t dark like it is in the US; most of the time it barely colored the water. I grew to love the subtle flavors of true Chinese food and drink. I never saw anything added to the hot drinks to sweeten or change the taste. It was more than just something to add fluids to your body. Everything was an experience. I learned to distinguish different flavors by their scent as well as taste without it overpowering the next taste. In China, as I found in Europe, life is to be experienced, not pushed through in a rush.”

“Finally I could tell someone what I thought about a corrupt system that allowed people in power to persecute someone for no other reason than because they don’t agree with the way they look or dress. And that was just what I did. I was so angry by that time that I spent thirty minutes explaining what had happened to me and how our judicial system allowed it. When I finished the judge asked the prosecutor if he wanted to cross-examine. When I looked his way he was shaking his head negatively. I was allowed to return to my seat and when I sat down my attorney whispered, “You just won your case.”

“I promised God that I would try and be a boy if it would stop my dad from hurting Mom. After he left, I handed out candy while mom cleaned herself up. After a while she came to take my place, but I lost all desire to go out. I thought it was my fault she got hurt. I was the one who didn’t fit, and she got hurt because of it. I changed back into my perfect boy clothes”
