“Rev, rev, rev your boat, aggressively down the canaaaaal,” Malakai sang, his grating voice slicing through the fog, like a fork scraping across a plate. “Un-merrily, un-merrily, un-merrily, un-merrily, life is but a nightmaaaaaaaare.”
Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone
“And it doesn’t matter who, Darien. They’re all vile.” “It’ll matter when I line them up and shoot them in order of importance.”
Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone

Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone
“Of course I do.’ Believing things would one day be better was the only way he could move forward. It was how he’d managed to survive this long.”

“To forgive is to set yourself free. Tormenting yourself over your past mistakes will not fix them. What you choose to do with your future is far more important.”

“We figure out how to get the Veil back up,” Roman said. Heads turned his way. “We take down the imperator,” he said, “and anyone else who’s ever made the mistake of fucking with us.” His heart pounded with determination, adrenaline, as he concluded, “And we finish this.”

“I love you, too, Shayla Cousens. I’m so. Fucking. In love with you that I—” He looked away for a moment, and then finished, “—I can’t ignore it anymore. I am thoroughly and hopelessly in love with you.”

“Before she could think it through, before she could stop herself, she was stepping forward and throwing her arms around him. Roark stiffened. He lifted his arms—holding them out at his sides, as if he didn’t know what to do with them. And then those arms closed around her, and she was sobbing uncontrollably into his jacket. Her father simply held her.”

“It was Mortifer—hopping onto the bed. “Hi, Morty,” she whispered. The Hob merely went and sat by Darien’s pillow. It had become his spot; he, too, hardly ever left. “Is Itzel hogging the fridge again?” she asked him. He nodded, the red-tipped black flames on his head flickering.”

“Roman broke into a sprint of his own, his mind blank with shock and relief, both so intense they were almost debilitating. Paxton kept pace beside him, the kid smiling big as he called Travis’s name—Travis! Travis! Travis! They ran. Past ambulances and fire trucks. Paramedics and Fleet soldiers. Roman collided with Travis hard enough to bruise, Pax latching onto them, too. Their arms were around each other, and Travis was speed-talking, but Roman didn’t hear any words. All he cared about was that his brother was alive, and he was. Travis was alive.”

“It was silent in here. Too silent. Loren ran her fingers through Darien’s soft hair, his blood soaking her pants. Mortifer was in her lap, hugging her waist while she held on tightly to Darien. As they drove back to Heaven’s Gate, her eyelids slid shut, and the tears began to fall.”

“Mortifer, still quivering with fear, peeked between his fingers. “Don’t be afraid.” He dropped the keys and opened his arms. “It’s just me. It’s just Darien. You know me—I won’t hurt you, I swear.” Finally, Mortifer lowered his hands. His eyes were sad. Darien broke. “I’m sorry,” he choked out. A wobbling sob ripped out of him. “I’m so sorry, buddy.” Blood dribbled down his chin and dripped onto the knees of his jumpsuit. “Come on.” He beckoned with fingers he could hardly control. “I’m going to get you home.” Mortifer scampered out of the cage. Hesitated by his knee. “There you go,” Darien encouraged as Mortifer ventured closer, his webbed feet making sticking sounds on the concrete floor. “There you go—I got you. I got you. Get on.” He lowered his shaking hand, and Mortifer got on, climbing up the length of his arm. “Max and Travis need our help. We’re gonna help them, okay? We’ll do it together.” He pushed to his feet and crossed the room. Stepped over dead bodies and splashed through puddles of blood. He braced his hands against the walls, leaving bloody fingerprints everywhere he went. With Mortifer on his shoulder, hanging onto the back of his neckline, he staggered down the hallway. Toward the control room.”

“It was funny—he was the one who protected her physically, but she was the one who protected him mentally, emotionally. She took care of him in the areas where he struggled to take care of himself. He felt at peace when he was with her, and each day he was blessed to spend with her was a gift.”

“In the study at the Hunting Grounds—the house where the Huntsmen lived—Loren sat by herself on the couch as five of the Seven Devils did what they did best: They killed. Brutally.”

“Bandit licked his chops. ‘Please. Take the chicken.’ He nudged it closer with his nose. ‘We cannot handle another day of Darien’s sour mood.”
Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone
“Bandit?” she whispered. “What are you doing in here?” He took her question for an invitation to come inside, paws padding across the floor. ‘I bring a peace offering.’ Her brows went up. “A peace offering?” He came closer and opened his mouth. The chicken plopped onto the floor with a squeak. “You’re giving me Cluckles?” He sat down. ‘If I do, will you stop being angry with us?”

“Roman began their side of the introductions, starting with himself. “I’m Roman Devlin. This is my little brother, Paxton.” A pause. He gestured to Shay, and when he spoke next, he pinned his cold stare on Nash, his tone dripping with attitude. “—And this woman here, her name’s Taken.” Shay blinked.”

“Sometimes it scared her, how intense things were between them. Sometimes it scared her, how much she loved him. But she refused to think of that now. Of the future and all its uncertainties, the goodbyes she might one day have to make. Right now, Darien Cassel was hers. And it was the right now that mattered.”
Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone
“Bandit chuffed. ‘If she finds out about this, and you end up sleeping on the floor again, don’t try blaming me.’ ‘You’ll be in the doghouse with me. You can keep me company.’ ‘Absolutely not. I’ll be sleeping in the bed with her.’ ‘Good luck with that.’ Bandit snort-laughed. ‘I look forward to seeing the look on your face when I get to cuddle with her, and you don’t.’ ‘Cuddle? You don’t cuddle anyone. You hog the bed.’ ‘I’ll cuddle her just to piss you off.’ ‘Again: Good luck.”
Kayla Edwards, City of Smoke and Brimstone
“I love you.” The statement, said with so much heart, made her blood sing, her pulse skipping for a reason unrelated to her health. “Anything you want, Loren, I’ll do it. You want me to get down on my knees, I’ll get down on my knees, I don’t care that these assholes are watching,” he said of Logan and Tanner, who pulled their eyes off them and found somewhere else to look. “I’ll do it right here.” He began to lower himself to the floor— She squeezed his hands, stopping him. “Darien. No.” “Then name it. Whatever it is that’ll make you forgive me, I’ll do it, Loren. I’ll even lick the floor at your feet, if you want me to.” “If you lick the floor, I’ll be even more mad at you,” she said sternly. “Fine, no floor licking. But I mean it, baby, I’ll do anything.” He grasped her hands a little tighter, thumbs again grazing the backs of them as he awaited her response. Her forgiveness.”
