“Every strawberry plant is a clone of another plant. You know what the difference is between the ones that thrive and the ones that don’t?” I shook my head. “A gardener.”
“I don’t follow.”
“There’s two kinds of growth in life. The kind where you grow however and whenever you want with no struggle. You may get big, but you won’t have the roots to become anything but ground cover for other plants. You won’t fulfill your purpose. Then there’s the other kind. The kind where someone loves you enough to trim your runers and your blossoms while you’re young so that you can become strong, so you can be trusted to bear good fruit. That’s what the gardener is for.”
I looked at the strawberry plant and squeezed my fingers around the gardening shears. “I need to be the gardener.”
He nodded. “Only if you care enough about the plant to let it be what it’s meant to be. Nothing can grow how it needs without a little pain. But by trimming the plant now, we can trust it to grow right in the future.”

“My grandpa always taught me to judge people based on my own experience with them, but ignoring the experience another person has is like describing an elephant as a tree trunk because I only felt its leg. An elephant leg is a lot like a tree trunk, but it doesn’t take into account the rest of the animal and it doesn’t paint the full picture. So while I can’t dismiss my experience with Tag, I have to accept Tripp’s, as well.”
