“Hey, English," she said softly. "Some hero you turned out to be. You know, you could've told me you were about to pass out down there in that tank. We'd have relieved you."
His eyes opened partway and he smiled up at her weakly. "Thought you'd go for the hero type. Wanted to impress you."
She reached up to smooth the damp hair off his forehead. "Oh, I'm impressed all right. Right down to my toes."
One corner of his mouth tilted up faintly. "Glad to hear it. I'm pretty impressed by you, too. Who'd have guessed? Women commandos..." His voice trailed off.
"Sleep now," she urged him quietly. "You and I are going to have all the time in the world to compare resumes once you're feeling better."
His eyelids cracked open a fraction, sluggishly, as if it was a tremendous effort to do so. "Promise?" he mumbled.
"Yeah. I promise.”

“Michael stared narrowly at her. "So you shot me to save my life?"
"Well, yeah. Basically," she answered.
"It was a big risk to take," he muttered, apparently only partially mollified.
"Better than certain death." Then she added quietly, "I didn't want to lose you.”

“Life was short. They both might die tomorrow. Why not seize the day--or the night, as it were?
He speared his hands into her hair, backing her against the closed bedroom door, kissing her with his entire body. She managed to mumbled, "This is insane."
"Completely unprofessional," he agreed, lifting her shirt over her head.
"Stupid." She tugged his belt from around his waist.
"Colossally dumb." Her bra gave a soft pop and fell away.
She arched into the impossibly erotic caress of his long, lean fingers against her skin. When she finally managed to tip her head forward and draw a breath, she reached out to unbutton his shirt and push it off his delicious shoulders.
Leaning forward to kiss his neck, she said against his warm, raw satin skin, "We're going to regret this in the morning."
He replied huskily as he kissed his way down her neck, "Mmm-hmm. Deep regret. Passionate, pounding regret."
"We've got to stop."
"Absolutely.”

“There was a fire here, like it or not.
Finally, reluctantly, she broke the silence. "Any idea how I'm supposed to get out of here? Or do I get to spend the rest of the night on this extremely comfortable table? Or perhaps more accurately, under it?"
He grinned. "Think you can pretend we had a tryst set up in here?"
Her mind shot back to that incendiary kiss they'd shared. "I don't think that'll be too hard to do.”

“She did notice, however, that he was in no hurry to get off her. He continued to sprawl across her on the table. Not that she was making any big point of shoving him off, of course.
Reaching for a jocular tone, she commented dryly, "You're a hell of a kisser, English."
But his voice came back, sexy and low, "You're not that bad yourself, island girl.”

“She started as Michael's arm snaked around her neck, pulling her to him without warning. Their mouths were only inches apart, their gazes locked--hers in startlement and his in dawning awareness. Whoa. Sex appeal alert. She stared at him, transfixed by the magnetism abruptly tugging insistently between them. A door closed and the outer room went silent. Whoever'd come in had left again.
Michael murmured, "Have I gotten around to telling you how beautiful you are and how attracted to you I am?"
"Uh, no," she managed to mumble, thoroughly startled by his directness.
He smiled crookedly. "Well, you are. And I am."
Now what was he up to? Was he for real or was this just a tactic to throw her off balance? If so, it was working like a charm. Time for a countermove just in case. "So are you. And so am I."
The humor faded from his midnight gaze, leaving scorching heat in its place.
Yowza.
He asked quietly, "What do you suggest we do with all this mutual attraction?"
Oh my. He could kick her butt in hand-to-hand combat and he was a closet romantic. She was a goner, for sure.”
