“Alone and unarmed I was on the Via Ostiense – not quite a comfortable feeling. The only wish that I had was: ‘Get away from the street!’ As if sent by God, a house door to the right of me stood open. I gathered all my courage and jumped towards the open door and into the house, and received a shock: in the corridor stood a platoon of Italian infantry men under direction of a young Leutnant. Then I had more luck than sense: the Italian lieutenant held his hands up and his men hurried to do the same. It was the one time during the whole war that I personally took prisoners.”
