“...And a woman I used to know
Who loved one man from her youth,
Against the strength of the fates
Fighting in somber pride,
Never spoke of this thing,
But hearing his name by chance,
A light would pass over her face.
-"Those Who Love”
Sara Teasdale, Mirror of the heart: Poems of Sara Teasdale
Oh Yes, My Dear, Oh Yes
Oh yes, my dear, oh yes,
There is flint in me,
There is stone.
Were you blind, could you never guess,
Had you never known?
Could you not, long since, have foretold
In the dark and alone
There would flash an edge of fire
When flint struck stone?”
Sara Teasdale, Mirror of the heart: Poems of Sara Teasdale
It Is Not I
It is not I they love
Although they think they love me,
It is that picture of themselves they see
As though a mirror hung above me.

I can reflect them with a grace
That lets them talk and makes them shine,
And if they tell their troubles to me
I do not bother them with mine.

It is not I they love, there is no I
Except for you who have me for your own,
And for the rest my heart may hide or seem
A thing as light as snow, as still as stone.”
Sara Teasdale, Mirror of the heart: Poems of Sara Teasdale
My Lips Have Not Complained
My lips have not complained,
They have not said a word—
It must have been my stillness,
If anything, you heard.
When you are far away,
And half the world around,
Silence travels
Faster than sound.”
Sara Teasdale, Mirror of the heart: Poems of Sara Teasdale
